Why Social Health Is the Missing Key to Living Longer, Healthier, and Happier
Kasley Killam, a Harvard-trained social scientist, wrote this book about social health and its impact on physical and mental well-being. The book explores various social health styles and offers practical tips for improving social fitness.

Kasley Killam, a Harvard-trained social scientist, wrote this book about social health and its impact on physical and mental well-being. The book explores various social health styles and offers practical tips for improving social fitness.
So social health is the dimension of your overall health and well-being that comes from connection.
So if you think about it at the most basic level, physical health is about your body. Mental health is about your mind. And social health in contrast is about your relationships.
But oftentimes, connection gets lost in the conversation on mental health. We think that spending time with loved ones is something that improves our mood without necessarily recognizing that it does a lot more than that. It actually influences our risk for things like heart disease and dementia and diabetes. And at the extreme end, it influences how long we live.
you said something, can I remember the exact words, but you said social health is your connection, your relationships is as important as something like physical exercise. But couldn't you argue that it's more important?
I think you could argue that connection is more important than any of these other health behaviors. But I take a bit more of a modest approach in trying to help people understand that we already know that it's important to be physically and mentally healthy. Social health is on par with those aspects of our overall well being.
Kasley Killam, a Harvard-trained social scientist, discussed her book, which focuses on social health and its impact on overall well-being. The book explores the importance of connection, different social styles, and strategies for improving social health.
So social health is the dimension of your overall health and well-being that comes from connection.
But oftentimes, connection gets lost in the conversation on mental health. We think that spending time with loved ones is something that improves our mood without necessarily recognizing that it does a lot more than that.
And so thinking about social health separately from physical and mental health is a really useful way of understanding that we need to prioritize the actions that can help make us socially healthy, just like we prioritize behaviors to be physically and mentally healthy.
So if you think about physical fitness, it's exercising your physical muscles as a means to improve your physical health. And so in that same way, social fitness is about exercising your social muscles to improve your social health.
So literally just putting it on your calendar at 2 p.m. every day, send a text message or an email to someone saying, hey, I'm thinking about you or expressing gratitude for something they've done recently or something you appreciate about them.

I was punishing myself over and over and over again for mistakes that I thought I had made in the past and I wasn't able to comfort that woman in that moment because I still didn't really have the tools but I was so happy to be able to write that in the book because I'm saying it to myself as much as I'm saying it to everyone reading it.

I can't stand white guys with podcasts so is this going to be tough for both of us?
My dad was absolutely terrified of any of us failing because he was walking the tight rope. He and all immigrants walk feeling one wrong move and it would be over. That's not an environment conducive to taking chances and that terror lives inside of me too but my opportunity to take risks is actually my parents legacy.
There's a chapter called pick me pick me which is about being a pick me girl which if you don't know what a pick me girl is it's basically a girl who will literally do anything for you to pick them like just pick me.
if you're out there thinking about every mistake you've ever made don't you did it exactly the way you were supposed to get excited about what you'll try next time because there will be a next time.

It's called No Time to Panic in which he lays out the physiological and the evolutionary causes of panic and then he takes a whole epic journey to treat panic disorder through therapy, medication, all kinds of psychedelics, breathing exercises, meditation and more.
One of the seminal questions at the start of this book for me was Am I broken?
So the book is called No Time to Panic how I curved my anxiety and conquered a lifetime of panic attacks book I wrote before that is called The Boys in the Cave deep inside the impossible mission in Thailand about the rescue of the 13 boys from the cave in Thailand but No Time to Panic just one more thing about that I talk about conquering a lifetime of panic attacks it's not that I've vanquished panic and I will never have a panic attack again it's that if it happens I'm going to be okay with it I'm going to know how to deal with it and I'm going to be able to forgive myself and that is one of the most important things that I want to impart on listeners is that sense of self forgiveness and self compassion and also a sort of healthy version of self reliance
This book, written by Matt Gutman, was described as really revealing and fascinating regarding panic.
We're talking to my friend and former colleague Matt Gutman, ABC News, a national correspondent who just wrote a really revealing and fascinating book about panic.
