I mean I remember the brutality of that day like it was yesterday and hearing people, especially lawmakers, elected so-called leaders of this country downplay or deny the reality of that day. I mean to say it's infuriating is an understatement. It pisses me the f*** off.

I'm good like physically, mentally. I feel like I've had a lot of time to come to terms with what I experienced that day.

a big part of writing this book was not just to memorialize what I did but also what so many other officers did that day.

I think it was 850 officers who rushed to protect the Capitol during that moment.

I mean it's unfortunate I think not just Republican lawmakers although they do deserve quite a bit of you know the scrutiny that they're getting right now but lawmakers in general and how they are indifferent to the people that they're elected to represent and serve.

Anything Ed Brubaker touches, makes, writes, coughs on. Anything Ed Brubaker does. I think the man is a genius and I think every story that he tells is spectacular.

I live on purpose. I write it down. Journaling is one of the greatest tools to pulling oneself together, to gather your thoughts.

When we get out there in the streets, especially after COVID, we have to be more kind to each other. More kind. I say it that way. I could say kinder, but more kind. It's a difference.

You don't think you're gonna get somewhere and be happy. You gotta be happy on your way to happy.

I got joy, but listen here. That fortune I'm talking about? Don't ask me for no money. Don't ask me for shit. You gotta love me.

So the book is called The Map and the Territory.

In 2008, so you're the Fed chairman. In 2008, you testify that the one thing about this financial collapse that you didn't see coming was that you thought the banks would have been better stewards of their own capital, that they would have been better self-regulators, and that this book was your journey into finding out why they were terrible.

Well, I don't think they fully understood the types of risks that were out there.

the simple premise which we all made were that people would act rationally in their long-term self-interest made a huge impact on how you viewed how the economy would function.

I think the number ought to be twice that. So 22 percent of that kind of thing.

I think the black community is a conservative community.

In my book...One thing you'll learn very quickly, I don't sidestep the issue of race at all.

I think you have to be comfortable in your own skin, wherever you are. And if you have to betray or deny a part of your existence, don't do it.

When I say that at the end of that day on January the 6th, we, the United States Senate, both Republicans and Democrats, went back out and performed our duty to affirm that President Biden has won the election. We did our job.

I honestly think that the A. America's greatest country on earth, we are the solution, not the problem.

But when I read this, I would you know, why would with such with Trump rhetoric of the southern border of migrants, why would the Latino population support him in such a way?

I think the harder part is really thinking about our story and the sort of cultural forces that that are among us. And I'm talking about understanding the racial baggage that we carry from Latin America.

You know, I was ignorant to so many things in this book and that's why it's such a great read. And man, there's some really personal stories that are fascinating.

And that entails deputizing local police forces going around people's homes. And there's over 10 million U.S. citizens in this country that live in mixed status families.

Invisible Generals. This book was partially inspired by you going to see Red Tails. Yeah. You hated it.

And he said, Doug, if you think changing a name in a movie is bad, let me tell you the family story to let you know how I lived. And then maybe you could see why that doesn't mean as much to me as it means to you.

So the Invisible Generals are America's first two black generals, a father and a son, General Benjamin O. Davis, senior and General Benjamin O. Davis, junior.

But their story had never been told. And it was my passion to go out and write it.

So it was important for me as a family member to say I am going to take control of this narrative and I am going to write it so the actual words in history that happened can be told in an accurate way.

I knew it. I honestly knew it.

Man, we had the luxury of time. Which is why the album's entitled Daytona.

We really just put our all into it. But we took our time.

Definitely to buck the trend. A lot of people make long albums and sometimes they have a lot to say so they make long albums. Or they make long albums so the streaming numbers go higher and it makes their sales bigger. And the music may be a little cheap. So just so people knew that we weren't playing those type of games, we made a shorter album, seven songs, straight to the point of all killer, no filler.

Because this this is the purest rap album that people have had in a long long time and just to be honest I mean this is quintessential samples from Kanye West and lyric driven hip hop from Pusha T the best rapper best producer that's the album of the year period.

It's Hot and it's through the roof. Everybody loves it but it's like man he had to go through all of that just to get back to this point.

Your book is fantastic. I read it the day it came out. I would love for you to quickly talk about the 30 second rule.

So 30 second rule is if when you make a mistake, you don't want to make mistakes, but you are going to make mistakes. You don't want to ruminate over them for a long period of time.

Take yourself out of living because you're so upset with yourself. But it's OK, I think, to be upset. So what I learned in my training was when you make a mistake and I use this in space, you make a mistake. Oh, man, that was a terrible mistake.

You can feel upset, but cap it at 30 seconds. So 30 seconds to beat yourself up. Call yourself names. Just be brutal to yourself. Don't vocalize any of this because you'll scare the people next to you. Just keep it internally. But after that, 30 seconds is over. It's over. You've had your little rant. It's time to move on.

This is true though. Muscles and books are not known to associate.

But it's an amazing book. It's an amazing book that I learned. I learned so many things about you.

It's almost an inspirational book without it being airy-fairy.

it feels like one of those things where it's like a dream and you're like, please don't pinch me. Don't nobody wake me up.

I had this thing inside me. I had to do it. I had to tell a story.

It's difficult to achieve across the board because likeability is so wildly subjective, but it's particularly challenging for women.

If you're a woman who strives to lead, you are told one of two things. You're either told you're too much, too assertive, too aggressive, you need to tone it down, or you're told you're not enough.

So women are told they can either be likable or they can be a leader, but there's almost no way for them to be both.

For women candidates, they have to clear both hurdles. Voters have to like them and they have to believe that they're competent.

When women do that, it violates this expectation we have of women that they are communal, that they'll act communally.

Leslie, wait, can I just stop you on show for a second? Because your book is amazing.

I don't know if people, if you haven't got it, get it, listen to it. I'm on chapter six, I've been laughing, crying, laughing again, crying, yeah. But it's amazing, amazing.
