The Daily Show: Ears Edition

I don't know I actually got to do an audiobook about this. It's called Sex, Race and Robots and it's about this.

It's a fantastic book.

the story of a couple in the 60s, a black couple in the 60s living in America who escaped to Africa and, you know, a whole journey unfolds.

it could be set today as well.

it's also about expectation.

We're all longing for a home that we hope will be better than the one we're in.

Look at that. The dad and the brother are out playing with Spot and the mom is inside cleaning up spots. I mean, what is that? A puddle of pee? Was R. Kelly their dinner guest?

And look at poor Jane in this one. She can't even have a little fun without doing some chores. Can't a girl just roller skate? She has to sweep too? What's next? She's gonna have to jump rope while making a sandwich?

So, initially, like part of my story has always been my weight loss, right?

I was around like 370 pounds, right?

And I know people are looking at me right now and they're going, well, wow, he's fat.

That there's something wrong with me saying, hey, I was this one way that people for no good reason, excoriate you and make you feel, you know, shameful. And look how I became one of you.

And so for me, I want to make sure that I have things in my life in order to where I feel good, peaceful and reassured about where I'm going, who I am and how the people around me feel supported and encouraged.

My parents, my dad was a helicopter pilot, and my parents, they were a helicopter news-gathering company, and I grew up in the helicopter. I spent more time in the helicopter than I did in my own bed.

My mom is hanging out in the helicopter with a camera on her shoulder, quite literally just strapped in with a belt, looking down at the ground which is 1,500 feet below her.

Bob Turr is dead. Literally Bob Turr is dead. I'm Hannah and we can throw away everything that happened in the past. All of that is gone.

It was very confusing in the moment, and what made it confusing is that life is complicated, and childhoods are complicated, and mine was especially complicated for distinct reasons. I loved my childhood; it was so much fun and there was so much love within my family, but it was also incredibly scary at times.

I think what I appreciated most about it was it took an issue that many people are trying to turn into this homogenous blob and it showed us how many individuals are involved in all the stories. People talk about trans people as if it is one human being that is doing certain things and they talk about gay people as if...and this showed you there are many stories, there are many people, there are many complications. People are people.

if these people say you have the power, wouldn't you want to?

I wouldn't want any one person to have that authority.

but wouldn't it almost be cool to have that power?

no look, I've read this and I don't see a way to do it. We've exhausted every option. I've done everything I could and then some to find a way around this. It's simply not possible.

This seems like a joke and the book is very funny which is great but you're learning about a side of the animal kingdom that many people haven't talked about.

I was surprised by the topic too. I come from a background of studying evolution and I'd always assumed that queer behavior was a sort of dead end for animals.

the basic version of the story is that we got the story of animal sex wrong. That we think of it as procreation only.

most animals are some version of bisexual and exclusive homosexual preference is very rare but there are some dolphins that behave that way.

So when I was 11 I realized I was gay and it was like the moment puberty hit it was utterly clear

It's a really beautiful story

It's a story about grief really

It's snuck in. Initially I was like, this is going to be a fluffy book, it's just going to be messy hot girl summer, and then I met the character and she was like I have depths that you can only dream of.

in the book I wanted to write about this woman who's exploring that and figuring it out, because at some point we do have to find a way to live and so she's like chasing life, she's chasing joy and she's chasing happiness and she's making a lot of messy choices along the way but I think that's part and parcel of it with grief.

In order for us to understand the way schools operate now, we have to understand that history.

And so I wrote a book that's about 2013, but it begins in 1916 by talking about the Great Migration and how black people came to Chicago.

I think that white supremacy in the history of racism in this country, I often say it's kind of like the virus and these things are like the cold. They're like the sneeze. So these are the symptoms of a much larger issue.

If you're a person that doesn't fundamentally believe that it's important to provide a high quality education to all kids in the United States and beyond, regardless of where they come from or who they are, I recommend another book to you and wish you the best for a merry holiday season. If you are an asshole, do not read this book. This book is not for assholes.

I think the first thing is to understand public schools as public goods and that these are all of our schools, regardless of whether you have a child enrolled there or not.

Well, the risk is always there. We actually were pretty lucky that we won 100 years without a really terrible pandemic. 1918 Spanish flu, now COVID. And we shouldn't expect it'll be that long next time. It's not that hard to get ready. You need to drill like you do for fire.

You know, I like how you lay out in the book what to do to prevent the next pandemic.

You gave a TED Talk a while ago talking about basically what we just went through over the past two years and then people blamed you for creating it because that's how things work if you say it, it happens.

So, how do you do that? Well, you see people getting sick. You see elevated deaths and you go in there and you actually take and you sequence it early on. And then you have a global group that is ready to go, kind of like a fire squad, comes in and very quickly you diagnose people.

My goal, like with my climate book, was to elucidate it in a way that would be quite straightforward.

I want her to be feminist. I want her life to be better than mine. What should I do?

It's much easier to deal with a hypothetical child than a real child.

When Hillary Clinton was running for president of the United States, the first descriptor on her Twitter account was wife. The first descriptor on the Twitter account of Bill Clinton, her husband is founder, not husband.

Because I think it makes people feel comfortable. I think people are very... People don't know what to do with the idea of a woman who has power or who's seeking power.

I think that when there's really quality, resentment will not exist.

America is not my friend as a black American person and so because of that I'm leaving.

when I made that decision to leave I was being oppressed in so many ways whether it be the withholding of your diploma the living in a neighborhood that is rife with violence these are all things that I was experiencing at that time and then on top of that to add an additional layer of trauma I was in a narcissistic abusive relationship and that's something that's more common with people who are of an oppressed minority

my decision to leave was really born of my desire to even free myself from those labels and that's what I was able to do by going back to Trinidad

is it truly upward mobility if you have to be afraid to gift your child a car that's expensive because a police officer may shoot that child because they think that the child stole the car just because they're black

in the united states of america as soon as you bring your blackity black kids from africa or from wherever and you think that you know these titles of being immigrant or chened out you know whatever we're going to protect you and perhaps they might give you a blinder but for your children they're going to have to experience what it is like to be educated in the education system of the united states of america and it ain't got no time for us

Some people are so poor, all they have is money.

What is rich? Am I rich in friends? Am I rich in family? Am I rich in life? Am I rich in money? What is rich?

Does money buy you joy? Does it buy you true love? Does it buy you intuition, creativity, insight, imagination? Does it buy you even safety and security? And the answer is no.

If joy is not the measure of success, you wasted your life. You don't want to end your life saying, I made all the money in the world but I was never joyful.

I read this book from a woman named Martha Beck and she talked about it in integrity cleanse and so it sounded right to me because I'm having this disillusionment of like how I saw the world and what the world really is showing me and growing up and so I decided last summer around May that I was just going to tell the truth all the time and see what it did with my life
