The Daily Show: Ears Edition

I started writing it when I found myself pregnant with my daughter Ramona and I was just at home and I couldn't tour.

I was able to give myself a little bit more compassion as I was reading things back.

I've slept with all the drugs I've ever done. Sorry, Grandma.

It's interesting because having written a book, a memoir, you have to really be a detective in your own life.

I think your editor read it and said, gee, it feels like whiskey is the main character of this book.

So I'm putting out a book called Comedy Nerd, which is a scrapbook of all my photos and memorabilia from my career.

So I brought some stuff because I don't know what to put in the book because I literally have like half a million photos in my phone.

My guest tonight is a correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning and a best-selling author whose latest book is called Mobituaries, Great Lives Worth Reliving.

It's like Mobituaries, which is a play on your name, but obituaries as well. Great lives worth reliving.

You went with all of the people who we almost wouldn't know about, you know? So it's not about Jimmy Carter. It's about someone in Jimmy Carter's family, you know?

It's not about Rosa Parks. It's about another woman of color, a black woman, who decided to ride on a tram when she wasn't allowed to, and it was all white.

It's certainly a more complicated story, a richer story, and a story more worth telling.

Mike Huckabee has landed on the Fox News channel and his new children's book is called I Can't Wait Till Christmas.

I basically wrote a very real book, and it's very sad, and I talk about everything. It's called Dirty Sexy Politics.

I talk about sex and politics and everything in between. And what I think about Sarah Palin, which has gotten quite a bit of coverage.

Not as much sexy as I thought there would be.

With the title I thought there would be more, quite frankly, sex.

It's on the bookshelves now.

My new memoir is called Dapper Dan Made in Harlem.

His new book is called Let Me Finish. Trump, the Kushners, Bannon, New Jersey, and the Power of In-Your-Face Politics.

You take us through a little bit of how you began, a little bit of your life, the journey that made you into Chris Christie as people know you. And then you really get into the meat of the presidential campaign from you announcing, from you going into the race all the way through to dropping out and then the story with Donald Trump.

I read Craig's book, Oh Florida, in preparation for this piece because that was like my Bible for a lot of this because it basically had-

It was also the first nonfiction book I had read in like 10 years, so I was really just absorbing all this new information.

I actually have a piece in my new book, The State You're In, where I argue that instead of laughing at the people in these mugshots, we should just every time look at them and go, there but for the grace of God, go I.

I think was in sports. We often go to like what's your salary and how many people are watching you or how many people in the stadium, but it really starts a lot before that you have to think of it like a business that needs to be invested in and you know, if the NBA is getting a billion dollars in investment. The WNBA is getting, you know, even a hundred million dollars of investment like one business is going to be more successful if you spend more on your marketing person and your branding person and your ticket your CEO and you have all these people like the business is going to run better. So by the time we get to the game, we've been so under invested in or at such a disadvantage the whole time like it's shocking that we have as much success as we do or as popular as we do as we are.

Yeah, it made me really emotional was a really touching moment. And I think that's the probably the most rewarding and the most important part out of our team's fight with the Federation and the lawsuits and the equal pay fight is like, yeah, of course we're doing it on our behalf but still in the grand scheme like we're so privileged. We still make a lot of money. We're still like superstars of some some kind but for so many women out there like it's my aunt in her job. It's you know, a domestic worker or it's a restaurant workers like it's so difficult to do these things even in our position. It's difficult. So to know that we've inspired or at least made people think you know down to every single level is like that's the biggest win. I think that we could have.

I love like racial justice books because I feel like I can relate to that a lot. Like the Hate U Give or like Blended.

This was a book series that taught me how to read.

It was one of the book series that I read when I was a kid it taught me how to read and so it's good for that and I know it may be banned somewhere because it's too far.

It's just crazy. Likely. Florida and Texas.

It's an important story about understanding that differences make us special not, they don't have to pull us apart.

my son is seven years old and he is a huge fan of the book series. It's one of the first books that he actually read.

My book, Brown Boy Joy was featured on Netflix where Joe Scott read my book.

And when I showed him the book, he's like, Mommy, it's me. And I'm just like, dude, it's been you. It's always been you. You're on all the covers of these books.

So I always say my books are for Black children. They are written for Black children, but they are not just for Black children. They are for all children.

One specific Black clash that I get a lot in Brown Boy Joy is I have a page in there where the kids, the boys, are playing with toys, and one of the boy is holding a doll. That's literally all you see is he's holding a doll.

And so I know that has impacted him. Also, I think he's just really centered in his Blackness. He's so far ahead of where I was as a child. I think I was, I know at his age, I was busy trying to conform to Whiteness, busy trying to hide my Blackness.
