I think it is massive. We have had millions of people blocked from voting. We have had millions purged from the rolls who had been on the voter rolls. The purging and the voter suppression has been so intense that we have Donald Trump in the White House right now. That's the power of voter suppression.

There are some really scary parts of the book where I read about things I never knew before. I knew about the larger picture of voter suppression in certain states and certain places.

Absolutely. And that has been a well cultivated myth.

So for instance in Alabama, Alabama said you got to have a government issued photo ID and then said but your public housing ID does not count.

I didn't think the book was going to be important. I didn't think the book was going to be top of the booksellers list.

I was very pleased when it was going to be published, but never in my life thought that it was going to be so much read, you know?

I think the reason everybody should read the book and I think the reason so many people have read the book is because not only have you lived an unbelievable life through one of the most unbelievable and horrific times, but what you're teaching people about life beyond that is so important.

I've written the book also in commemoration of all those people who were resistance fighters and lost their lives, helping other people to stay alive.

You know, many people know you have a fantastic new book out talking about love and it's a beautiful experience.

And I was like, um, saying all the lines from Random Hearts, you know, Chris and Scott Thomas and Harrison Ford.

This is a beautiful book.

And we're just kind of showcasing because we never want to be stuck in the past, you know. We don't want to... We've been through all this erasure. We've been through all this misunderstanding. But there's so much beauty here. And, you know, there's... You know, the food really kind of speaks for itself.

And, you know, people can experience this philosophy. And we're pushing healthy food because, like, everything in the restaurant is gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, soy-free, pork-free. You know, and it's just because of that's just the philosophy of how we're cooking. And we're normalizing not only indigenous foods but eating healthier, a lot more plant diversity, a lot more protein diversity. And just kind of showcasing what's possible. You know, and plus we're looking at all of North America from Mexico through Alaska, which kind of reflected in this book that we just put out.

No, we're not a museum. Right. You're not trying to eat what they ate back then. Yeah. For me, it's almost like, it's like if Native American culture had been allowed to modernize to today, if it had been allowed to develop, this is the outcome. Absolutely.

I read, I recently read, uh, the book 1776 from, um, oh shoot. What's his face? David Mitchell, David, not David Mitchell, David McCullough, David McCullough.

1776. It told me 10 years. I, I start and stopped it every, you know, every couple of years. And finally I, I went through the whole thing.

I finished the book and I thought, oh, this is going to cover the whole American revolution. It literally covers one year. 1776. Wow. Okay. The book ends at the end of the year. And that was a crazy ass year for America.

My takeaway from the book was this idea that like, you know, what, what, what is that? 250 years ago in New York city, the people, the concerns of the people in America are totally different to what the concerns are right now.

It turns out it was actually the Pulitzer Prize winning Tony Morrison novel, Beloved.
