And she is the author of a book called The Grieving Brain.
The Grieving Brain, it has this subtitle, The Surprising Science of how we learn from love and loss. And I think people reading the book will really see the ways that love gets encoded in the brain and what that means for how we understand loss as it's encoded in the brain.

Catherine Schultz is a staff writer at the New Yorker who has a new book called Lost and Found, a memoir which is really about her processing a huge loss in her personal life and then a huge gain.
I remember feeling simultaneously heavy and empty like a steel safe with nothing inside.
What I remember most from those first hours after my father died is watching my mother cradle the top of his bald head in her hand. A wife holding her dead husband without trepidation, without denial, without any possibility of being cared for and returned.
The most important thing that had vanished when he died I realized in that instant is wholly unavailable to me life as it looked to him life as we all live it from the inside out.
The new book it's called lost and found as you heard it is partly a memoir about losing my father and falling in love but also very much a reflection on these categories of loss and discovery that all of us live within in so many complicated and interesting and wonderful ways.

The book also contained an essay about shopping, body neutrality, and his relationship with his father.

You brought up shame there shame is a recurring theme for you can you say a little bit more about the role of shame in your life and how you work with it?

And that's when the book idea came to me is to really say well why don't I tie all these ideas together because you can see up states and down states in exercise, in nutrition, in sleep, in circadian rhythms in our autonomic nervous system and in fact conceiving of yourself as being rhythmic and having these ideal times for output and ideal times for prioritizing restorative processes actually is the most natural way to live and the healthiest way to live.

I also find that finding a book that is very dense and that you can find yourself really trying to read and it's a little beyond your capacity at the moment, like a good history novel, maybe something with a little bit of math in it or something like this, a little engineering or something of that kind. Something that will make your mind just kind of poop out.
And the second you're reading Wolf Hall or whatever it is that is driving you to drows, close the book, turn off a light and let it take you.
