He also wrote Stamped Racism, Antiracism and You. He wrote Stamped From the Beginning, the history, the definitive history of racist ideas in America.

He says literally any system that generates racial inequality is a racist system.

And if you are complicit in the system by doing things like hard work and individualism, you're an assimilationist. This is what Ibram Kendi says in how to be an anti-racist.

Glenn Beck, like two weeks ago, his book, The Great Reset. Can I get the date on that? What date did that come out? It came out about a month ago, if I'm not mistaken, maybe even six weeks ago. That book is crushing it at extraordinary levels.

I always thought the problem with most Christmas stories are bad you know really only a Christmas Carol needs a wonderful life or good Christmas stories and the reason most of them are bad is they're about you finding something that you want finding love or finding a home or finding mom and dad or whatever but Christmas is actually about sacrifice and about change it's about what in the Bible they call metanoia which is turning around and giving something away you know giving something that you love away in order to be free

I got that line from Carl Sagan, who was one of the greatest science communicators we've ever had, who most of you if you know Carl Sagan, you should know him from many of his books. But most people know him that he was the author. His one fiction book was Contact, which was the movie with Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, which is a spectacular, spectacular movie actually.

Even Carl Sagan's most famous book which then became a series I think in the late 70s, Cosmos, they redid that. Seth MacFarlane redid it on Fox with Neil deGrasse Tyson.

He wrote the book Cosmos, was really his most ubiquitous book that then became the incredible science series that was on American television, I think late 70s, early 80s.

Harvard students, according to some professors, don't have the skills to read The Scarlet Letter, one of our most storied novels that I was assigned in ninth grade.

one of his first really big works was a series of lectures he gave on the book of Genesis

And I think the story is he just thought that, you know, maybe it was possible that this kind of perennial text that people have been reading for more than 2000 years, was there a way it might speak to a wide audience if he just gave it his best shot at trying to make sense of it?

I think the story was that he just booked a theater for 16 nights or something and it sold out.

And I think there's actually quite an important moment in Dr. Peterson's own thinking through what his own, you might say, what his own vocation is and what the work of our time is.

There are all kinds of wonderful treasures, things figured out in the past, great books, works of art, ways of understanding cultural, let's say, cultural wisdom that it's just there. It's just there.

And I think what I've tried to do at least is trying to approach things from that angle.

I think Exodus does give us really fundamental language of the landscape of our own experience, right? We all in some sense are living in states of longing or you might say the desert, a place where we're trying to find our way, we're confused, we're battering around, we're lonely, we're alienated, whatever. We got our personal issues and so on. And then the question is, well, how do you make sense out of that? And that I think is in a way what the book of Exodus is itself at least taken historically by peoples of various faiths to be a kind of revelation about how one can move from that state.

And it doesn't come down just to ourselves, by the way either.

that these works that human beings have found transformatively insightful to make sense of their own lives for 2000, 3000 years, that they can still speak today.

And rather than simply tell people what they're about, what happens if we just have a conversation about it? Does that come alive in a way that it then comes alive for us?

And my experience in this last week and a half, a week or so that we've been here is that this conversation, which I would say has very low to no levels of ego, which is sincerely just trying to figure out this amazing text and see what we can understand about it has been a really beautiful and memorable experience.
