Yeah so I'm reading a book right now about it's called The Storm Is Upon Us it's the story of how the QAnon evolved as a set of beliefs and one thing that's just patently obvious is that the most ardent QAnon followers they don't care about evaluating evidence and revising their beliefs to get a more accurate picture of the world.

The person who controlled the past, controlled the present, controlled the future.

The party has an almost animal instinct towards repression and control.

It's called Grief Day By Day by Jen Warner, she wrote it after her husband already died, best friend, life partner, right, then lose them to cancer and in the year since he passed away she wrote this book based on her experience which contains a lot of her wisdom about working through grief.

Addiction feels like self care but it's the opposite and it can be deadly as well as dead end.

The only way out is through, right? The obstacle is the way. I know it's cliche, it is true.

And again we'll bump Grief Day By Day one more time and she talks a lot about this in that book, how mourning makes you more available to connection which can help you process and make meaning out of the loss again.

there's this we call him a decision expert named Gary Klein who's written a number of popular books about decision-making in the real world and I've learned a lot from Gary Klein I cite him in the book and he's also changed my mind about a number of things including pointing out some of the problems with academic studies of decision-making which I hadn't noticed before he's really valuable but I completely discounted him for years after I first heard of him because one of his books is I forget the exact title but it's something like The Power of Intuition many talks about the power of intuitive decision-making and I just you know I heard that and I knew that he was critical of academic studies and so I immediately mapped him on to this archetype of people that I was already familiar with who say things like you know don't trust science just listen to your gut like right you know scientists may tell you that vaccines don't cause autism but if you believe that they do then you should just trust your own intuition right and so I think that's ridiculous and so I just like lumped him in with those people and didn't really listen to what he was saying and it wasn't until years later that I like read his papers more closely and was like oh this guy's actually he's being very reasonable he's not he's not saying what those people are saying he's just talking about this is kind of intuitive pattern matching things that our brains do.

and there's a book about it by a journalist called The Greatest Hoax on Earth catching truth while we can and basically his conclusion was this Abignail might have done some of the stuff they said he did but mostly it's embellished or exaggerated and a lot of its fabricated

he said many people when they step back from the story and really take a breath and really think it through is it possible that all this happened according to the narrative and it's just not it's just not plausible this is what he said

I don't think it's possible to completely detach your identity from your beliefs in the book I talk about how there's this famous essay by Paul Graham the tech investor and entrepreneur and essayist and it influenced a lot of people when it first came out 10 15 years ago it's called keep your identity small and he's basically pointing out this phenomenon that I've been talking about and says you know all else equal you want to let us few things into your identity as possible if you want to be able to think as clearly as possible and so I and a lot of people I know read that and we're like yeah that makes a lot of sense I'm gonna try to avoid labeling myself in any way you know so that I don't distort my thinking so I'm gonna avoid political labels I'm gonna avoid calling myself a vegan or an atheist and the problem is just that this is not logistically feasible like labels are just practically useful to be able to just characterize your beliefs and your choices and just emotionally it's probably not reasonable to get rid of all feelings of attachment to your beliefs about things like politics so instead what I try to do now and what I what I advocate for is just trying to hold your identity more lightly trying to maintain a little bit more emotional distance from your beliefs and so you can still call yourself you know a feminist or whatever you are but try to hold hold that more lightly so that involves things like reminding yourself that that label is contingent so yes I'm a feminist now that because that label just best describes my beliefs but if I were to you know come to the conclusion that feminism is actually wrong or harmful then I would not be a feminist anymore so essentially you're trying to make the label feel just like just a label and not like a flag that you're waving or a badge that you're wearing

as we mentioned a couple weeks ago Gabe and I are reading this book called the Grief Day By Day by Jan Warner and she wrote it after her husband already died and he was you know the love of her life they had a special bond and then she lost him to cancer and her journey through morning eventually became this book which I gave I assume she must have journaled a lot during this process because it's sort of a lot of clarity in there definitely

what g'da board the French theorist wrote a book in the 1960s and called the Society of the Spectacle in which the spectacle the performance the human performance is a more profitable kind of society than a society that is authentic in some way so we have inauthenticity and alienation being a more profitable way that society could be organized than an authentic society and that has all sorts of downstream effects let alone the fact that it's grew up children at a very deep level so when we get to your question of what is different or so apocalyptic this time I think it's pretty easy to see that a society in which it's more profitable for each person to be addicted narcissistic distracted confused about reality not knowing what's true that is not a society that can solve its problem that is not a society that can solve climate change that is not a society that can escape pandemics or agree on anything and that is incompatible with the future that we want to live in so we know already that we can't really live with these being the business models that guide the way our society works

she wrote the book after her husband already died and he was basically the love of her life they had a great special marriage and then she lost him to cancer and she learned that she was dealing with complicated grief which means that the painful emotions associated with mourning they're so long lasting and severe that you have trouble recovering and resuming your normal life

she consciously understood that her husband didn't choose to die obviously but she was still angry at him for leaving her and in the beginning she was also angry at a lot of other people if that sounds familiar like people who still had what she had lost I hated happy couples she writes at one point I hated everyone over the age my husband was when he died

And then later on in my life, I just met Spger, did the red chapel and I saw that.

I wrote them to Mass Brigger that I was a very big fan of his movie The First One, The Red Chappal and Triton Ava wrote if you anytime consider doing a new movie about North Korea, I'll be glad to help you.

And I made the comment in the back of my most recent book in the acknowledgment section, the most recent novel, which is The Rifleman.

And then the back acknowledged that Betsy is my mate and my muse, my most fervent critic and the greatest inspiration I've ever had and the most fun I've ever had in the kids' car.

It looks like Xi Jinping America's number one adversary.

It's Donald Trump.

But the book is about Communist China and they are our number one adversary.

They have more ships than they're navy than we have in ours and they're building more than we are.
