It's a useful trope, but I got to the end of the first hundred days and I totally did not have enough material to write a book.

I describe him as The Last Politician.

Biden's theory of the case is you got to make sure that democracy delivers for people if you want people to stand up for democracy.

It was in the 1988 election where Richard Ben Cramer wrote What It Takes, the all-time greatest political campaign book. And every election since then has been filled with these insider accounts.

Richard Ben Cramer's What It Takes, which is the sort of the first, all of the inside the room, like glorification of strategists, like campaign trail books that are, you know, we now know about like Game Changers, all came from that book and it's an amazing book.

So this is from the book Game Change when McCain made the decision.

And so this is kind of like Game Change on steroids. We're really taking listeners behind the scenes.

Jonathan Karl has a new book out you know and some of the stuff in the book we've heard before Trump loved the insurrection. He bragged about the crowd size. We've heard that before. I don't know if we heard that before.

So I think that you guys would like it because it takes place in 1977 and it is in addition to having these plots that have to do with resonant things today, like tabloid journalism and mobs and the like. I think you'd like it because it's a wild year and 1977 was just crazy. There were so many insane things that happened.

And then this was just, honestly, it was just like, I've been thinking about a plot for The Hellfire Club, the first book in the series. And it was just fun, it was just an escape.

And also like the first book takes place in the McCarthy era and Joe McCarthy is a character in it. And I felt like I could say something about the era we were in by looking at Joe McCarthy, just like in this one, All the Demons Are Here, I felt like I could say something about charismatic demagogues and mobs and yellow journalism and tabloid journalism today by looking, by like making something up fun about the past.

I bought your book a few years ago, but I didn't read it until last September for one of the very reasons that you wrote the book, which is that it's become harder for me to pay attention to anything longer than a tweet.

So I really wanted to thank you for writing it because it's it's changed the way I think about how I spend my time.

What if we spent less time shouting into the void and being washed over with shouting in return and more time talking in rooms to those for whom our words are intended?

I think that's why Barack Obama really liked it, but I do think it's sort of the way that social media operates really is just a lot of people shouting past each other all the time and there's just not a lot of sort of one-on-one conversation, but that's the way we are most of the time.

It was also fucking clownish and ridiculous. And I don't want to let that part go either, because Ted Cruz, if you didn't see it like blew up a picture of a kid's book called Anti-Racist Baby, blew it up, put it on an easel and asked the Supreme Court nominee if she thinks that babies are racist.

But I would say on the negative side is that the young people who are showing up now to Republican events, like they are opting in because they like Donald Trump with the exception of like a handful of super nerds, you know, who are still like reading God and Man at Yale.
