So I think that you guys would like it because it takes place in 1977 and it is in addition to having these plots that have to do with resonant things today, like tabloid journalism and mobs and the like. I think you'd like it because it's a wild year and 1977 was just crazy. There were so many insane things that happened.

And then this was just, honestly, it was just like, I've been thinking about a plot for The Hellfire Club, the first book in the series. And it was just fun, it was just an escape.

And also like the first book takes place in the McCarthy era and Joe McCarthy is a character in it. And I felt like I could say something about the era we were in by looking at Joe McCarthy, just like in this one, All the Demons Are Here, I felt like I could say something about charismatic demagogues and mobs and yellow journalism and tabloid journalism today by looking, by like making something up fun about the past.

Let me just say this guy knows how to sell a fucking book.

Your latest book, All the Demons Are Here, the third novel in your Charlie and Margaret Marder Mystery series takes place in the late 70s.

Love a good period piece and explores several themes including the rise of tabloid journalism, disillusionment and conspiracy.

Number one priority is entertaining the reader and having them turn the pages quickly.

And I'm well aware as an author that I'm not only competing with other authors, I'm competing with Twitter and threads and Facebook and Instagram.

And I'm well aware as an author that I'm not only competing with other authors, I'm competing with Twitter and threads and Facebook and Instagram. And they say history doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes or there is a lot of rhyming. And in 1977, which was a wild and bizarre year in this country and a fun one to write about, there's a lot of rhyming because you have the rise of tabloid journalism because of the son of Sam Murders. And then there is this disillusionment and the post Watergate, post Vietnam War era.

I would say one of the two most important pieces of journalism I've ever done the other one being writing the book the outpost about Afghanistan but that was just telling a story this was more this was activism.

We are fortunate to be joined today by Jake Tapper, who of course is a CNN anchor but also author of the new bestselling thriller All the Demons Are Here, a work of historical fiction.

Well, it's ripped from Shakespeare. It's a line kind of from The Tempest, but the actual line is, hell is empty and all the devils are here.

And what is interesting is the way you, you actually, you know, create these characters of Max lion who is loosely based or how do you want to describe it? Loosely actually based on Rupert Murdoch.

I started watching some documentaries about Murdoch and I read a couple of books about Murdoch.

Our enemies are getting stronger. And as a country, we are getting weaker like straight out of Donald Trump.
