It's a useful trope, but I got to the end of the first hundred days and I totally did not have enough material to write a book.

I describe him as the last politician.

Biden's theory of the case is you got to make sure that democracy delivers for people if you want people to stand up for democracy.

My guest is Franklin Foer, author of the new book, The Last Politician, Inside Joe Biden's White House and the Struggle for America's Future.

It's a behind-the-scenes account of the first two years of Biden's presidency, from his swearing in a few weeks after the January 6th riots to the 2022 midterms, and everything in between.

Not quite. Largely because in his own head he's a great man in history and I think he wanted to have an accomplishment that you would set next to you, the New Deal or the Great Society, and he came so close to getting that.

If Joe Manchin had gone along with Build Back Better and you got the extension of the social safety net in all of those directions, he would have cemented that place.

I think in your list of accomplishments I would also point to the Inflation Reduction Act, which I think is maybe potentially the biggest of them all, and so much of that actually depends on its implementation over the course of the next four years.

You argue in your book, or the premise of your book is basically that Biden is essentially the last of a dying breed of politician.

Franklin, before President Biden announced that he wouldn't run, you had written that he had stepped down in order to quote, avoid the long term indignity of being remembered as one of history's great fools. Were you concerned?

Totally. It was like it was a he has a psychological set of armor that he built up over many years in order to deal with humiliation and with episodes where he falls flat on his face and over the course of his career, he'd fallen flat on his face many, many times. And the story he told himself was that he always rebounded, that he had the ability to grit his way through.

I think that there's a reason why everyone's using the word consequential and not saying best, which is subjective in a different way. I think that there's no two ways about it. It's always going to be marked in the story of who he is, that he is a president who stepped away after one term.

I mean, I think we have to say that everything will be seen through the lens of this election. So if the bungled transition to Kamala Harris and the bungled process of Sinatra and culminates in a Trump presidency, that is the lens through which he is judged full stop.
