Yeah so the book came out of a master's thesis I wrote at Johns Hopkins a few years ago I finished up my degree there and I wanted to explore. I analyzed and I've written about House elections for more than a decade and I wanted to use my getting my master's in order to explore this topic more.

And so the book is essentially it's a history of US House elections since the early 60s and I started the early 60s because that was the time of some landmark US Supreme Court decisions that enshrine the concept of one person one vote into law.

And so prior to those decisions you know House districts within states some of them had four times more people than some districts had four times more people than another district in the state.

So that's I thought that was sort of a good starting point for kind of modern redistricting and it also starts in 1964 with the Democrats at the height of their power they also have almost 300 US House seats. Lyndon Johnson has been reelected and so it sort of charts how the Democrats went from you know holding that being essentially a permanent majority in the House for much of the back half of the 20th century to 1994 when Republicans took control and then Republicans have more often held the house since then so it gets into all these kind of big concepts like redistricting and political realignment and the nationalization of elections that I think of all combined together to give Republicans more advantages in the race for US House and the other two are more important to the Democrats.

And it's funny thinking back on the advice that I gave him.

And thinking of like collecting, going from collecting like 30 emails at a Barnes & Noble in like Columbus, Ohio to being the vice presidential nominee is quite something.

I'll tell you it is personally surreal and weird to kind of see something.

He's like, I think I was wrong.

I believed a lot of these media lies.

He was raised by his grandparents who were pretty well off in a pretty middle class area of Ohio.

His Appalachian roots are ancestral.

And he's clear about that in the book.

His family moved before he was born to this region of Ohio.

And the book is kind of about that migration out of Appalachia into the kind of Rust Belt suburbia.

Hillbilly Elegy has skyrocketed to the top of the best seller list.

Hillbilly Elegy, the movie, I think is the most downloaded movie on Netflix. People are like, who is this guy?

And now JD's trying to grapple with them and make them more palatable. He was using the language of effectively like a niche online subculture that is very popular and very commonplace in that subculture and sounds horrible to the rest of the public and takes issues like a child tax credit that are pop you pull that is a 70% issue and makes it sound like something that is radical fringe weird like out of step with mainstream america etc It's the worst possible messaging you could possibly have right?

The democratic framing has been much more potent in terms of how people are thinking about the Jade Vance pick.

The trump campaign's attempts to define Jade in in context of his biography and his story and you know his bootstrap story and the best-selling uh biography and all of these things have really not been the thing that have um that have caught on with the American public.

Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires, and then wrote a bestseller trashing that community.

And I got to tell you, I can't wait to debate the guy. That is if he's willing to get off the couch and show up.

That is if he's willing to get off the couch and show up. So see what I did there. Sort of like he's being played by Chris Farley.

Whenever he had finished up Hillbilly Elegy, he'd come to the Huffington Post to promote it. And Arianna was like, you need to talk to JD Vance. He's such a wonderful young man.

And we had a long phone call where I gave him tips on how to promote the book.

And then it was like six months later, the thing's like a national bestseller. I'm like, well, obviously those tips worked.

I think he's a tone for that and he's come clean that's okay

I like the fact he represents pro-life that's a big deal for us as Christians and a lot of other issues I'd have to go through them but when I compare him it's Josh Mandel or him I think he did just such an excellent job of just asking the questions that's all we you know we wanted so we're really happy in order to partner with you and it's just so you know valuable to us as a show in order to have that on the ground experience it just means a lot

one undecided and, you know, two or three others that were sold on JD Vance, including because of his, uh, book and, you know, behavioral health work...

There's books like The Looming Tower and you know things like that that people should check out.

Lawrence Wright from the New Yorker wrote the whole book about it and there was a lot more of a scrutiny on this but this was the height of Iraq mania and then it just got lost in the Iraq war and the debates in the country and every once in a while around 9-11 everybody just kind of wakes up and is like yeah remember when the Saudis were 15 and 19 citizens crashing to their and oh and you know they kind of tried to get bin Laden out of Afghanistan but not really even though they were pretty sure about what he was up to and then they just spirited away a bunch of their citizens and ambassadors right after 9-11 and then they bought billions of dollars with advertising on American TV networks in order to prop up their image and you know what was going on there and oh they had all these connections to the Bush administration but then they're like well there's inflation and Roe versus Wade and all this stuff we shouldn't forget like a hundred years from now it's going to be 100% clear about what's happening

I mean, I recommend the book, always do, Lawrence Wright's book about 9/11 and the lead up to all of that in terms of the drop ball at the very least bureaucratic incompetence about knowledge of these people inside of the country and the fact that these guys making approaches to these hijackers were almost 100% connected to the Saudi government.

It's been kind of surreal to watch. Basically they got some early copies of the book and took quotes by people who were quoted in the book, attributed them to me and then kind of elevated.

AIPAC actually reached out to Ocasio-Cortez with quote, a whole lot more than an olive branch.

We can help to educate her to make sure that she doesn't have another face plant interview like this again.

Congratulations on the book, which is fantastic, which I read cover to cover and I encourage all of you all to do as well.

I think she thinks some of it is fair.

I think she thinks a lot of them are unfair. That a lot of them are people who are making kind of bad faith arguments kind of to feed algorithms and like get you know for clicks basically.

I think the moment is over in the sense that that's what it was but we're in in the kind of post-Bernie post-squad moment now that is that is still that is still being shaped.

I've never seen them be as forceful in critique of Democratic leadership and especially President Biden as they have been in this moment with Israel's, you know, all-out war being waged on Gaza.

I don't know if that counts as starting the show, Ryan.

I've got my eye on Ted Cruz. It's kind of a conflict of interest to have him on here because I don't want to help him sell books.

The Squad

It's called The Squad AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution. It's fantastic. There's so many nuggets in it.

And then the line that finishes that chapter is that she she knew it was going to be a big issue, but she never could have guessed how much she underestimated.

It's heavily female. Obviously, you have Jamal Bowman on the book cover, but it does seem almost like a sisterhood.

The Squad doesn't exist. You can't acknowledge that there is a squad.

But going back kind of through their trajectory in Congress, it was the case that that made up about like half of their struggle and reshaped it through the way that AIPAC and DMFI entered into the Democratic primaries in 2022, making sure that anybody who was remotely critical of Israel was either pushed out or reframed their position completely.

I just want to give credit, Christopher Leonard has a new book coming out in January we should definitely have him on, called The Lords of Easy Money.

He's got an excerpt out that breaks down some of these extraordinary actions that were taken in Fortune magazine.

It was actually a fantastic book, in my opinion, because it was about ESG and specifically about the takeover and the use of shareholder capitalism to push values that don't necessarily not only align with American public, but really much more hurting the country, using these values and others to go away from the core value of business.

Vivek basically launches his presidential campaign and his media career by writing the anti-woke ink.

Woke ink? Woke ink book.

Woke, Inc. Was the name of his book that really catapulted him into conservative media, et cetera, what started to get him the Daily Wire deal potentially.

In your book, you wrote, quote, the loser of the last election refused to concede the race and claim the election was stolen, raised hundreds of millions of dollars from loyal supporters is considering running for executive office. Again, I'm referring to Donald Trump.

It's exactly what I said in Nation of Victims, and I haven't seen the evidence since, that there was a scale of ballot fraud that would have changed the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

I've also said in that same book and ever since, that the real way the election was in a narrow sense stolen was the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story on the eve of the election.

When I wrote my book, Woke Inc., long before the word woke was in the Republican parlance, I was analyzing a problem that at that point was poorly understood by many Americans in this country.

I think wokeness is just a symptom of our deeper void for purpose and meaning in our country.

The overall theme is that we are at the end of an era that globalization was a moment in time that the United States created artificially in order to generate alliance to fight the cold war.

and in the eight elections since the cold war ended the American population has always gone with the candidate who is less globalist and more populist that includes Biden.

so we've been moving this way for a long time it's not an aberration it's a pattern and without globalization most of the major economies in the world have to add a minimum retool and for many of them that's the end of their systems.

the other piece is depopulation we've uh finally passed the point where the problem is no longer overpopulation the problem is that as globalization took hold everyone everywhere was able to move off the farm and into the town on the farm kids are free labor and in the town they're really expensive annoyances and adults aren't done so they have fewer of them you carry that out for 75 years and you don't just run out of children you run out of 20 somethings and 40 somethings most of the major countries of the world have now aged past the point of no return and this was always going to be the decade where they moved into mass retirement you play these things two together and the whole system starts to spin apart.

The film exposes potentially widespread illegal activities related to the 2020 election by using geolocation information to identify thousands of individuals who delivered thousands of illegally harvested ballots to drop boxes in five states.

This is all complete and total nonsense.

And so are they going to be able to easily tamp down these types of desire to go in this type of direction once they actually are in control of the House?

There's one story about this one woman in Ohio that I love so much. Her name is Ida May Stoll. She was the first white woman coal miner who really loved her job. She was a part owner in a mine. She was from a mining family. She was really good at it. She was apparently pretty brawlic and she was told by mine inspectors like, oh you can't work here. You need to get back in the kitchen. Women aren't allowed to do heavy labor and she was not about to have that and she fought back in the courts and she got her job back.

She's also working on a book called Fight Like Hell, the Untold History of American Labor and has been all over this strike from the very beginning.

They're offering up themselves just like the Civil Rights Movement, just like Gandhi, just like Moses, just like Jesus.

So afterwards, but by that time, Dodd-Frank was basically all law.

but he knew it was gonna be good and so for sam bankman freed to basically have carried on as if nothing has really changed DMing uh with reporters doing twitter spaces doing interviews just hanging out and being a dude incriminating himself incriminating himself constantly and that's what i don't understand about this so the two possibilities here give and take possibility you know he's he's this is part of a way to sort of negotiate with law enforcement or he rides this out to the bitter end if i'm curious as to whether he's actually going to ride this out to the bitter end precisely because of what you just said the the hubris that he has in sort of chatting with reporters incriminating himself doing interviews looking so casual and relaxed about the whole thing um i don't know i i mean i think maybe he thinks he can muddy the waters hire really good lawyers and um i believe he has one of glane maxwell's defense attorney there you go and just work his way through the situation because the law has been too loose around crypto period that it's not you know that is the law actually there to say this is a slam dunk for decades in prison
