He is also the author of The Righteous Mind, which I think is one of the best books on political psychology, as well as a bunch of other books.

They find it useful and they see that I don't have the usual academic contempt for religion. I actually think religion is, at least in the United States, religion on net is a very good thing.

He was our introduction to podcast. Jedediah Jenkins recommended I listen to the Jonathan Haidt. Wow. Sam Harris episode. He was on an incredible press tour for his current book, The Anxious Generation, but you would have probably become aware of him with the coddling of the American mind or the righteous mind or the happiness hypothesis.

I highly recommend the Jonathan Haidt book. I think he's got a phenomenal list there of things, how you should think of a parent around smartphones and specifically with schools.

I highly recommend there's a bunch of New York Times and Jonathan Haidt write ups about schools that have banned smartphones.

he's a fairly well-known social psychologist whose works includes the coddling of the american mind and also the righteous mind why good people are divided by politics and religion and his course you know quite honestly was super cool very interesting discussions but he was also extremely brief lasting you know just a few sessions over the course of two weekends which does kind of show the priorities of the curriculum right it like i said i found the discussions to be really interesting but unfortunately the course design itself felt more like i think compliance maybe even call it theater more than anything else

And so given that many, if not all of us will have spent time feeling hatred for the other tribe while glancing at our social media, I wonder if you could talk about the utility of the elephant and rider metaphor in this zone?

What socially has done is it has hyper empowered the extremes, but in an unusual way.

Jonathan Haidt is a pretty prominent moral psychologist at least. But also an atheist I think, right? He's an atheist again.

He has a second part about religion and his ultimate conclusion was that religion is kind of like a super massive gravitational object.

So I ended up being an atheist who respects religious insights now understands the utility of religion but still had that snobby thumbing my nose down at people.

The Righteous Mind and the Happiness Hypothesis were both based in part on the insight that when we're making decisions we do consult how we feel so if you're happy when you're thinking about the odds of success of a business you're going to think yeah I think things will work out I don't know I just kind of think things will fall into place whereas if you're sad or fearful and you think about the future you'll feel oh god so many bad things could happen no oh my god this is a disaster so we do often consult our feelings when making decisions where our feelings are not even relevant so it's kind of normal but we have to learn we have to teach how to do less of that in an academic context

And we sort of batted around ideas about how resonant what you were talking about in terms of the moral matrix and the five moral foundations and the divide between liberals and conservatives was for the American Jewish conversation on Israel and for the work of Encounter.
