Seneca reminded us that everything we need to be happy is right in front of us.
Marcus agreed and reminded himself to count those blessings present in our lives and try to imagine what it would be like to not have them and how much we'd miss them.
So take a minute and list some of your blessings this week. Take a conscious note of what you are fortunate to have and enjoy so you can see clearly as Epictetus put it, where they come from and feel a sense of gratitude for that.
This week's entry begins with the following meditation.

And she talked about something that I think is sort of part and parcel of stoicism which is that stuff happens and we have to figure out how to respond to that.
But her new book, The Addiction Anoculation Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence just came out and I actually think is perhaps more relevant to stoicism and relevant to you whether you're a parent or not.
And I believe we will soon be carrying The Addiction Inoculation as well.

Sextus Empiricus is one of those philosophers. He comes a little bit after the Stoics, born shortly around the time of the death of Marcus Aurelius.
today's excerpt is from his works and it's titled How to Keep an Open Mind.
I don't want you to think a skeptic is just someone who questions everything. Everything's always uncertain. There's never any peace. That couldn't be further from the truth.
And of course, I like the great hardcover versions as well. I was excited to get this one. Check it out. How to Keep an Open Mind selection of thoughts from the great Sextus Empiricus. Chapter 2.

I was just reading a book about Captain Bligh and Mutiny on the Bounty and it was a really interesting book and it reminded me of this expression character's fate you know so it happens the one time I'm sure you know the story but it happens at one time and then I was reading he gets another ship after and the men mutiny a second time and I was sort of thinking like oh man yeah if it happens to you once it's probably not your fault if it happens to you again it's definitely your fault.
but I highly commend the film. The most recent it's been made into a movie four times but the best of it I think is the relatively recent one simply called Bounty and it's absolutely terrific couple of riveting performances and it really explores the character of William Bligh which was one of the most complicated to say the least.
