Less than two months ago, one of the leading Republicans in the Senate, a man I respect, was going after the President of the United States for not reading To Kill a Mockingbird.

Rand Paul cites the book To Kill a Mockingbird in an effort to explain why we shouldn't blow up drug cartels. There are a bunch of reasons why that argument isn't compelling, starting with the fact that the book, despite being force fed to every American child for decades, isn't very good.

But in this case, instead of citing anything with any substance whatsoever, Rand Paul cites To Kill a Mockingbird. And he wonders whether J.D. Vance, the vice president of the United States, has ever read the book. That's the kill shot in Rand Paul's foreign policy argument.

And even children, when they're ordered to read this book, which nobody ever would have read it, if not for the fact that everyone is forced to read it. But even they generally understand that it was written by some random woman who invented a story in her head. It's not a documentary. It's not a textbook on constitutional law.

Every school and government relentlessly pushed the book on young people as soon as it was published in 1960. It won a Pulitzer within a year of its release. A group of librarians in Britain declared that To Kill a Mockingbird was just as important as the Bible. That doesn't mean the book is any good.

It is a scam. The story is fictional but based on lies. The book is propaganda, forced onto kids to teach that America is a racist country with a racist past. It's a poorly written book whose history has been sanitized to continue promoting that narrative.

To Kill a Mockingbird is not based in reality. It's not an accurate reflection of life in Alabama during the Great Depression. It is instead a very heavily promoted piece of racial propaganda, one that's intended, as with every other piece of racial propaganda promoted by our establishment, to demonize white people and portray black criminals as sympathetic victims of circumstance.

Biden also launched his reelection bid eight months ago with a video falsely implying that Florida had banned the book To Kill a Mockingbird, which simply was not true.

So Matt, we were supposed to read chapter three of To Kill a Mockingbird last night. What were your impressions of the chapter?

One of the first things in my life that brought me to God when I was 19 years old was reading Crime and Punishment, which is a story about an axe murderer.

And my thought is, could we call his wife first? ... And I remember reading that scene and I was living in a world ... That changed my life.

I remember reading that scene and thinking there is no planet in which this is good. ... It changed my life. It turned it toward God.

And so in exploring books like, exploring stories like Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, ... and Crime and Punishment specifically, what you find is that ...

And I'm not talking about some cute daisies; Crime and Punishment was the work that made me see the order in a chaotic world.

There's no such thing as a choose your own adventure novel that adults read because, uh, it's like what I'm reading Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. I don't want to pick the end.

A lot of great authors too were troubled people. Dostoevsky, he would not have been a pleasant guy to be around. A lot of interesting facts about his life. But if you're going to let that stop you from reading Crime and Punishment or from reading Brothers K or one of his great books, then you're punishing yourself.

And Crime and Punishment is the book that essentially made me a Christian. I mean, that's the book that changed my life.

It's very, very much like the kind of thing you find in Dostoevsky, like it's very Crime and Punishment.

I think Crime and Punishment is his most easiest one to read, most accessible... it kind of moves quicker and it's his closest thing to a real pageturner that you just can't put down.

Even though it's a novel, it still gives you a lot of Christian philosophy and will give you a real insight.

At the same rally, Walz invoked the JD Vance couch meme, which is based on a fake passage from JD Vance's book Hillbilly Elegy that was uploaded by a random Twitter user a few weeks ago.

I finally saw the movie I watched with my wife a couple of nights ago. We watched Hillbilly Elegy. And I hadn't read the book, but I'm sure the book was better. Books are always better than the movies in almost every case.

It's the movie based on the book written by JD Vance about his experiences. I think most of it is set in kind of middleclass working class Ohio with his family and his mother struggled with drug addiction, kind of his memoir.

Which as far as I'm concerned, the end of the second movie is the end of The Godfather series because Godfather III doesn't exist.

But we were talking about The Godfather, so using The Godfather as an example. I mean, The Godfather is not what we would call a Christian film, and it's probably the kind of movie that some Christians would say, oh, that's terribly inappropriate for a creator. You shouldn't watch that. I think The Godfather, yeah, there's violence in that movie, there's evil, a lot of bad stuff. It's not for kids, okay? It's definitely for adults. But it's kind of a Shakespearean tragedy. It shows a virtuous man, Michael Corleone, a war hero, being dragged down into evil, losing everything that's important, and culminating in a powerful final scene in Godfather II.

If they remade The Godfather as a slapstick children's movie, they'd be like what they did with Animal Farm - turning a classic into something completely ridiculous.

If you've ever seen Lonesome Dove, it's the greatest, I'm sure I've talked about it on the show before, it's the greatest Western of all time. Technically, it was a television miniseries, but I think it still is one of the great films ever made. ... the story follows a group of cowboys on a dangerous cattle drive from Texas to Montana ... along the way they stumble across an old friend ... and they end up hanging the gang ... it was a tragic moment for them. It was a tragic moment for them. They didn't want to kill their friend, but they had no choice. He was owed a certain punishment and justice means giving a man what he's owed.

It reminded me a lot of Lonesome Dove, which is one of my favorite things that's ever, you know, favorite movie.

I think I would certainly put it in the top three. And it's also one of the greatest, I mean, it's certainly one of the greatest television miniseries. I think it's probably the best television miniseries of all time.

Lonesome Dove, Chernobyl, and then Band of Brothers is how I would rate them. But Lonesome Dove, of all the things that have ever been put on film, I'd put it in the top 15, 10, 15 in that cut.

the western miniseries Lonesome Dove happens right after Diane Lane's character is a prostitute named Lori is kidnapped and then terribly abused by an outlaw named Blue Duck. Robert Duvall's character Gus kind of this grizzled old western guy rescues her and later that night when they're sitting together Lori breaks down in tears and says they shouldn't have done that to me Gus they shouldn't have taken me and Gus gives her a hug and pats her shoulder and says I know honey but they did I know they shouldn't have but they did they did.

I've been waiting for just a straightforward Western series a la Lonesome Dove and classic Western, and it was that until it went and fell off the woke cliff.

Carl Frisch, who will become chairman of the Fairfax County School Board, swapped the Bible for books including Lawn Boy, Gender Queer and Flamer.

One is a now familiar book called Gender Queer, which apparently enjoys wide distribution in schools all across the country because we've seen outrage over this book all across the country.

a school district in Keller, Texas has stocked its school libraries with a book called Gender Queer, which features cartoon images of oral sex, discussions of masturbation, among other topics both written and illustrated.

There was a... great book written by the author S.C. Gwynne, who has several really good history books, including one about Stonewall Jackson called Rebel Yell that you should read. But he wrote a book called Empire of the Summer Moon.

One of my favorite books of all time is Empire of the Summer Moon about the Comanches.

He wrote a book called Empire of the Summer Moon. And this is about the Comanche tribe focusing primarily on the Indian wards... They were masters of the horse, the Spanish brought them in. The horses are not indigenous to this part of the globe. So the Indian tribes didn't have them until the Spanish brought them over in the 16th century. And that just revolutionized so many things among the Indian tribes and the Comanches.

There's a book by S.C. Gwynne... Empire of the Summer Moon about the Comanche tribe. He said the book isn't a defense or apology for white settlers, it doesn't flinch from evil done by that group, but gives a balanced account acknowledging that Indian tribes in North America were almost without exception brutal and warlike.

They're just redoing Harry Potter. They're doing it again, from what I understand. ... The books also exist. They're not out of print. All that stuff is right there. You can find it on Amazon. Why do kids need a new Harry Potter?

yesterday if you listen to the show i spoke for maybe five six minutes or so about harry potter harry potter books had been banned from a catholic school and i said that look i'm not a harry potter fan at all i don't really care about the books

billions of these books have been sold and so if they had that effect shouldn't we see houses bursting into flames all over the place yet that's not what we observe

the spells in harry potter consist of faux latin and gibberish and the magic wands being waved around aren't real spells

I've never seen The Devil Wears Prada, but I'm pretty sure that the film is largely set in New York. Women in New York can still get abortions unless they don't exist because they're fictional, which is a logistical problem that will prevent them from doing a lot of things, including getting abortions.

Matt, in The Princess Bride, the gatekeeper's name is Yellen, and the albino, at least in the book, is his cousin. So it's quite possible the albino's family name was actually Yellen.

And last week, I observed, again, not as an insult whatsoever, but I observed that Janet Yellen, the Treasury Secretary, looks a lot like the albino who runs the torture chamber in Princess Bride.

And yeah, I'm an unapologetic fan of the Princess Bride. I think it's you can't call it one of the greatest films ever made, certainly, but it's one of the most rewatchable movies I think ever made.

People are outraged because the CEO of Sony hinted that Sony might be cooking up a remake to The Princess Bride.

Just leave The Princess Bride alone Sony, just leave it alone.

There are some movies that are, there's no conceivable way to improve upon them. They're nearly perfect as they are and this is one of those.

Here's an idea, if you want to make a movie that's sort of like The Princess Bride, a movie that's inspired by it, a movie that's in the same vein as it, then just make that movie.

The reaction from the proabortion death cult, it kind of reminds me of if you've seen The Exorcist. It reminds me of the last scene in The Exorcist when the priest is drawing the demon out of its host and she writhes and curses and vomits and everything.

It's like a real life version of the children's book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, which has proven to be one of the most prophetic works of literature of our time for my money.

We enjoy reading Dr. Seuss, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, all the classics.

Okay, it's... the book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, is one of the most prophetic works of literature, I think in, of our time in American history, certainly. And there's a great example right here.

And if you're not familiar with it, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, it's all about this kid who's got a mouse in the house and the mouse wants a cookie and he says, okay, I'll give you the cookie. But next thing you know, he wants a napkin, then milk, then carrots, then everything else.

That's the way it works with the left: you give them the one thing they want and now, no, now we need more and here's the next thing, here's the next thing.

That's how the book ends. It's pretty dark at least as I recall but the point is You give them one thing and they want another and another and another and they're just they're never ever satisfied ever

The one book that they're censoring is Ryan T. Anderson's book on transgenderism. With the great title. Yeah. When Harry Became Sally.

Amazon, without warning or explanation, removed from its website all copies of a book authored by Ryan T. Anderson titled When Harry Became Sally Responding to the Transgender Moment.

Now, Anderson's work offers a scholarly, thoughtful, sciencebased criticism of gender theory, and the Barnes & Noble description says When Harry Became Sally provides thoughtful answers to questions arising from our transgender moment.

It was apparently blacklisted by the world's largest bookseller, ostensibly for violating Amazon's hate speech policies, but no further explanation was offered until this past Thursday.

We have chosen not to sell books that frame LGBTQ plus identity as a mental illness.

Mein Kampf, for example, is still for sale on their site. Hitler's viewpoints are still considered acceptable enough to warrant inclusion in Amazon's catalog, but scientific facts about transgenderism are not.

Amazon appears to have quietly updated an internal rule... removing books, starting with Ryan T. Anderson and his book, When Harry Became Sally, responding to the transgender movement. It was unceremoniously removed from Amazon. The book is a very scholarly, civil, compassionate work that argues against leftwing gender theory.

It's a very scholarly book, very civil, compassionate... not inflammatory at all.

Greatest book title I've ever heard. When Harry Became Sally, responding to the transgender really good book, too.

And there's no excuse for treating people badly. I mean, he's got a bunch of stuff in there that is directly a rebuttal to the suggestion that people on the right don't care about a serious person.

He filled in the blank with a book claiming that it's harder somehow to obtain a book than to obtain a shotgun. ... but as long as you're not trying to buy some forbidden text, like Dr. Seuss's McElligot's Pool, it's quite easy to buy books.

Mick Eligot's Pool, which is an actual banned Dr. Seuss book and the only reason it's banned, so far as I can tell, is that it uses the word Eskimo. That's it, that's really it.

Eskimo is not a slur, it's not a pejorative. We don't have to bleep it out when I'm saying it right now. Eskimo, you can say that. It's not offensive.

but the the titles are and to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street if I ran the zoo McElligot's Pool which I've never even heard of that one I consider myself a Seuss expert but I've never heard of that one before on Beyond Zebra Scrambled Egg Super and the Cat's Quizzer.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises told the Associated Press that the books, here are the books, and to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street, if I ran the zoo, McElligot's Pool, On Beyond Zebra, Scrambled Egg Super, and The Cat's Quizzer will no longer be published due to hurtful depictions in the books.
