About 50 years ago, a psychologist named Julian Jaynes wrote what is, for my money, one of the most interesting books of all time. Even if the central thesis is almost certainly completely wrong, the book was called The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind.

Consciousness, Jaynes proposes, is a developed trait and a relatively new one in the grand scheme of things. He argues that human beings only became selfaware about 2,000 to 3,000 years ago.

The mind was split between the two hemispheres, like it is now, but the two together did not create a cohesive conscious whole as they do now.

Jaynes' theory was that the right side of the brain would speak to the left side of the brain in a literal, audible sense, so that ancient people were hearing voices in their head all the time.

He argues that the left side of the brain considered the voice coming from the right side to be the voice of God, or of the gods.

Someone emailed and recommended that I read Julian Jaynes, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. And so I did. I did read it. I this is a weird book because I don't agree with almost any of it. I disagree with 98 percent of this book, but I kind of loved it because it was really fascinating. I read it almost more as a sort of science fiction than anything else.

He argues that consciousness arose in the human population very recently, about 3,000 years ago, and before that humans operated with a bicameral mind, essentially hearing voices they interpreted as gods.

But then the book Sybil was published in 1973, followed by two film adaptations telling the allegedly true story of a woman with multiple personalities. And coincidentally, since that movie and the book came out, the diagnoses skyrocketed from there. The only problem is that Sybil was a fraud.

that this is how split personalities work in movies and TV shows, not in real life. There was a bestselling book called Sybil back in the 70s. I think they made a movie about the book as well.

And that's the one that first popularized this concept of multiple personality disorder. In that book the patient Sybil, real name Shirley Mason, has a condition that works kind of like what you see in the TikTok videos.

I just finished a book called In the Kingdom of Ice, which was written by I believe the author Hampton Sides written a few years ago. And it's a tremendous book and it tells an incredible story about the USS Jeanette expedition back in like the late 1870s, early 1880s.

They were trying to find a polar sea, got locked in the ice for two years, endured two Arctic winters, then when the ice melted they attempted to escape, only to have the ship sink. The survivors had to trek a thousand miles across the frozen ocean to Siberia, many dying along the way before finally reaching safety.

When I read books like this, it just reminds me how much superhero franchises and wokeism together have totally ruined Hollywood because you've got these real life stories that would make incredible films, but there's no one to make them in Hollywood. There should be 20 great films about Arctic exploration alone.
