It goes back in many ways to the very first book I wrote back in the 1970s called Alone With Others published in 1983 I think and I've always been gripped by the question of always being gripped by the paradox that we are creatures who are simultaneously embedded in a world with others, in language, through our parents, through society at one hand.

His latest book, though, is particularly challenging to me as a guy who likes to eat cheeseburgers. It's called A Plea for the Animals, the Moral Philosophical and Evolutionary Imperative to Treat All Beings with Compassion.
We dove into that subject and much more in this conversation.
The speaker's thesis basically is we ought to be thinking very hard about the well-being of the what is it 70 million other creatures that we share the planet with... and that we kill 60 billion land animal every year and the trillion which is a thousand billion sea animal every year that's 120 million per hour so this is food for thought you know quite literally.
I want to point out that this discomfort is the road for the next cultural change or next step in civilization when we somehow feel at odds at odds with something this window something there is not quite right.
You can't remember 8 million species 8 million species and some but that we kill 60 billion land animal every year and the trillion which is a thousand billion sea animal every year that's 120 million per hour.

Gretchen Rubin wrote this book after an eye doctor visit made her realize she was taking her five senses for granted. The book details her exploration of each sense to achieve deeper engagement with the physical world and improve her life quality.
Anyway, the book is called Life in Five Senses. How exploring the senses got me out of my head and into the world.
And I realized that I'd been feeling that for a while that something was missing and that realization and that walk home made me realize that what was missing was just this intense engagement with my five senses. And so that's what led me to want to write the book.
It has really changed the quality of my life I mean I have been studying happiness for more than a decade so I have dozens and dozens of happiness project resolutions that I follow but I realized that something was missing and this really was what was missing was the sense of like deep engagement with just the physical world and like the elevation of the ordinary experience and so now I feel like I just am so much more tapped into the world and other people and myself because I'm just so much more aware of the particularities of it.
Yes well it's one of the things that's fascinating about the Met is all of the artifacts meant to help people touch the transcendence so there's so many shrines and icons and reliquaries with relics of saints you know because people want to touch these things and they want to bring something home with them and there's just a very physical element to wanting to engage with the transcendent but having a physical representation of it really helps us feel like we're in touch with that.
Oh yes so the book is called Life in Five Senses have exploring this senses got me out of my head and into the world I've written other books happiness project which is all about happiness better than before which is all about habit formation the foretendencies which is about a personality framework that I discovered and I have a podcast called happier with Gretchen Rubin where my sister Alyssa Kraft who's a Hollywood showrunner and I talk about how to be happier healthier more productive more creative each week I have a website Gretchen Rubin.com where all these materials are gathered and I have all kinds of free resources and articles and I'm all over social media at Gretchen Rubin and I have to say I love hearing from people I love insights observations questions resources so hit me up in all the places we can all learn from each other.

That article, which was called What Bobby McElvan left behind has now been turned into a book which is called On Grief Love, Laws and Memory.
The book is all about the wide and improbable varieties of grief and how kind of varied it is for all of us, how different, how idiosyncratic.
The Maccolvain spoke to a therapist who warned them that each member of their family would grieve differently. Imagine that you're all at the top of a mountain she told them, but you all have broken bones so you can't help each other. You each have to find your own way down.
I was as angry as Helen, what's Helen was furious about this and she shared it with her grieving group, a group of local women, all of whom had lost kids and they were furious on her behalf. Everyone wanted this diary back.
Oh god you're so nice okay well my book is called On Grief love loss memory.
