Ep. 607: MeatEater Radio Live! Whitetail Buck Beds, Deer Sex, and Mauled By a Black Bear

The podcast host used an excerpt from this book's essay "Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight" to compare the cultural significance of Balinese cockfighting to the deer hunting traditions depicted in the movie *Escanaba in the Moonlight*. The essay discusses how seemingly irrational behaviors can hold profound meaning within a cultural context.

What sets deer hunting apart from the ordinary course of life lifts it from the realm of everyday practical affairs and surrounds it with an aura of enlarged importance is not, as a functionalist society would have it, that it reinforces status, but that it provides a metasocial commentary upon the whole matter of assorting human beings into fixed hierarchical ranks and then organizing the major part of collective existence around that assortment.

"

Which of these is not one of the five tools of wildlife management listed in the 1949 book A Sand County almanac, axe, cow, water, gun?

Axe, cow, water, gun. What would be your guess, Steve?

Cow.

No, that's wrong. Water.

Water is right. Nobody got that right though the time we played.

What year was most of that book written?

it was written in the twenties

Episode: Ep. 177: Poison vs. Choppers

It was described as having elegant and compelling prose about the outdoors, resonating with the listener in college and remaining relevant even today, 70 years after its publication. The book's timeless stewardship ethic was noted as particularly relevant to Texas's private land conservation efforts.

"

I mean, his prose was so elegant. I mean, it was so compelling, and he just wrote about the outdoors in ways that really spoke to me. And in ways that no one had done.

I think the whole stewardship ethic, you know, and of course, in a private land state like Texas, that's very germane to what we do.

I contacted an old associate, Kurt Mein, the world's greatest Leopold authority, a trustee of the Leopold Foundation, a professor of ecology at University of Wisconsin, the author of the definitive Leopold biography.

He has read every quotable word Leopold ever wrote or said.

Aldo was a great man and a deep, deep thinker, but he never said what you keep saying he said, stop it.

"

Aldo Leopold's talking about technology he's talking specifically about hunting technology and he was saying that that you can't improve the well you can't improve the pump without improving the well yeah he's not talking about oil rigs he's talking about water water but meaning if you're going to make it easier and easier and easier to extract more and more and more water you're going to have to figure out a way to make the well better too deeper and better and pure because you will suck that some bitch dry

Episode: Ep. 395: When Things Go South Up North

The book was mentioned as one of the author's favorite books for outdoor enthusiasts. It includes a passage about hunting walrus in Alaska and technically being in Russia.

"

Yeah, like Arctic Dream. It's like Coming into the Country by John McPhee, like greatest, greatest book for outdoorsman.

In Barry Lopez's Arctic Dreams, he's out hunting, he's out hunting with Eskimo hunters and they're off Alaska and they're hunting walrus. And he says for a while, he goes, they were technically in Russia.

Episode: Ep. 157: Bottle to Throttle

Though the author is not pro-hunting, this book was noted for its compelling explanation of the author's unease with hunting and for providing a pathway to a more comfortable understanding of hunting's place in the relationship between humans and wildlife.

"

The book that most changed my view on wildlife and kind of ecology and environmentalism is a book by a guy that's very uneasy, almost antagonistic toward hunting named Barry Lopez.

And the reason I think it's helpful, like if you like to hunt, the reason it's a helpful book to read is Lopez in his talk about Eskimo hunters and his talk about wildlife in the Arctic and what's happening in the Arctic, he makes such a compelling case about he doesn't condemn it and he doesn't take cheap shots but he lays out in a really clear way like why he's uneasy with hunting.

Episode: Ep. 119: Walking the Edge

The book's epilogue, which discusses the hunting of walrus with Alaskan natives, prompted the author's exploration of the connection between hunting and religion in the Bible, specifically the saga of Jacob and Esau.

What first got me interested in the idea that there was something to think about here is I was reading year many years ago in Barry Lopez's Arctic Dreams and in the epilogue to the book he's hunting walrus with Alaskan natives though he's actually in Russian waters and they're slaughtering walrus on the ice and the smell of blood and gunpowder are still lingering in the air and Lopez doesn't get into it but he alludes to the reconciliation or the need to reconcile Jacob and Esau or this reconciliation that occurs. I remember thinking like what's that?

It was positively reviewed by one of the podcast speakers, who mentioned the book's discussion of traditional hunting practices, such as hunting buffalo by cliff jumps and caribou by river crossings. The speaker also noted that these practices, while ethical in the past, would be considered unethical today.

"

I love that. But was it?

Yeah, so in there Lopez talks about how anthropologists know the the hunting of Buffalo by cliff jumps and then also caribou by River crossings and then but at that time that was an ethical practice, you know, and so you know, which is interesting because today we would cringe if somebody did something like that.

Episode: Ep. 403: Rattling Bucks with Joe Rogan

It was mentioned in relation to turkey hunting and the idea that a bird's lack of response to calls may not always be due to fear, but sometimes disinterest. The author describes watching a tom ignoring hens' attempts to attract it.

"

And this book, there's this book, the 10th Legion by Colonel Tom Kelly about turkeys. And he talks about that same thing.

He always thought when you, when a Tom won't come, it's because he's afraid of getting killed and thinks it's a person.

But then one day he describes watching a Tom. He's watching a bunch of hens and he's watching a Tom cruising along.

And the hens are doing all the shit that he would do to try to call in a Tom. They're doing the calling, they're doing everything.

And he said, the Tom never gave a shit, never lifted its head up.

Episode: Ep. 262: The Jake Brake

It is a book about turkeys, and a story from the book was discussed regarding a hen yelping near the author, while gobblers nearby didn't react. This challenged the idea that turkey responses are solely based on call quality.

"

You gotta read the 10th Legion.

Episode: Ep. 168: Satan's Decoy

It was mentioned in relation to turkey hunting techniques, specifically the use of ditches and corn to bait turkeys and then shooting them efficiently from a distance. The podcasters compared this old-fashioned technique to modern-day methods like using decoys.

"

I was reading 10th Legion. Tom Kelly's book. He talks about... Colonel Tom Kelly. One of the ways that they shot out turkeys is when pot hunters, meat hunters I think he calls them would bait... They'd dig a ditch that was maybe a foot or 18 inches deep. They'd bait it with corn for a while and then on the day they wanted to reap or harvest turkeys... Not reaping. That's where you take a fan and walk up on them with a pistol.

Episode: Ep. 125: Live from Tempe

The podcast host referenced this book as the single greatest turkey hunting book ever written, quoting it extensively on turkey hunting techniques and strategies. Specific passages discussed the importance of shot placement over shotgun artistry and the "Kelly factor", which describes a hunter's ability to shoot ambidextrously.

"

What you are interested in here is not shotgun artistry, but the simple delivery of a charge of shot.

A delivery affected often through a hole the size of a grapefruit. Or through a slit like the crack between two loosely fitting barn doors. You normally only have to deliver it once.

It lets you keep the gun partially presented all the time. It is as comfortable as any. If a turkey approaches from your left, he is under the gun.

And if he comes from directly in front of you, you can ease the gun from your left knee to your right and at the proper time slouch down even lower and let the barrel down until it bears.

If he were at quarter to nine, skill and intelligence would have again trumped over ignorance and superstition. But he ain't.

Episode: Ep. 117: The Bronzeback and the Bat

It was described as the greatest turkey hunting book ever written and was referenced when discussing turkeys eating crawfish.

Episode: Ep. 109: Hunter Harassment

The book was referenced during a conversation about turkey hunting strategies, specifically discussing fall hunting techniques using dogs to disperse flocks.

"

And you read in the 10th Legion, he talks about this as well. Colonel Tom Kelly discusses this in the 10th Legion, that a fall hunting strategy... Well, I'm not telling you boys this, I'm telling the listeners. How you're generally hunting turkey, unless you're bushwhacking turkeys, in the spring what you're doing is you're exploiting the fact that they're in their breeding cycle and you are going out and making the sound of a female in order to lure in the male.

Episode: Ep. 067: Vortex Optics Headquarters, Wisconsin. S...

It was described as a must-read book about a turkey hunter in Alabama, offering humorous anecdotes and insightful observations about turkeys from a historical perspective. The book was highly recommended by multiple speakers.

He also points out that if you imagine the world's history as being a timeline stretching from the tip of your finger to the other tip of your finger with your arms spread out, you would remove human history with one stroke of a nail file. And he also says that he explains how in 80 million years, Japan was the first country in the world to have accreted all of the Aleutian Islands into one big landmass. And that landmass will dock up against Alaska. And what's cool about that is that Alaska formed the same way. It was accreted archipelagos that formed in a big glob of just islands accumulating together. And it docked up against California. And that's what caused the gold that became the California Gold Rush in the Sierra. Because all that stuff that went under the plate bubbled up like that out there. But then this big blob that's Alaska shot up against the California coast and then rode and is riding a transform fault. And so far it's ridden north to where it is now.
