He wrote, of course, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which became my favorite movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. And his words and his writings are meant to be intentionally disturbing on some level.

And I read the book overnight and thought, wow, this is just amazing.

And I do, I still have that copy of the book, which I had all the cast signed at the time.

And read it and thinking, my goodness, this is just amazing. This chocolate room and the illustrations, which, you know, everybody will hopefully will remember Quentin Blake's illustrations, which are so wonderful.

If you read the book alongside it, which I have done recently, I read it during lockdown. You'll see that lots of the script is lifted from the book so you can see the kind of Roald Dahl bit.

He invoked the quote last days of the British Empire as he sought to explain the decision to originally depict the Oompa Loompas that way.

Maybe he would have been a little bit more body positive, but the changes to Dahl's books reflect something important about the broad issue of political correctness.

But in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1964, the Oompa Loompas were when it was written in 1964. Do you know what the Oompa Loompas were? Yeah. Yeah. African pygmies.

And once explained how the Oompa Loompas, whom Dahl originally wrote specifically were African pygmies, had actually come to work for Willy Wonka.

Should should we have a little bit more sensitivity towards fat kids? Are there some fat kids whose feelings get hurt reading this who are our fat not because that they're glutton's, but just because of their genes probably is it OK? Is it like is it that big of a deal, though it doesn't matter.

The deep nastiness of rolled dolls work has nothing to do with sort of one-off references or which books Matilda is reading and everything to do with the sort of deep sort of sense of cruelty and unfairness at the heart of the stories themselves. And that's what makes them great, right?

And so remember in, uh, Charlie, the chocolate factory, when Willy Wonka turns into little digital bits and they fly into the television, all of these narratives are hanging in the air while these games are going on.
