I've been reading the Walter Isaacson, Elon Musk book, which is hagiography in a lot of ways.

I have to say though, you know, the Walter Isaacson book that came out. Right. What was it like two years ago? There's a lot in there about his mental wellbeing and admissions from his himself.

Have you read elon's uh book yet so I mean I can tell you it right now this is what it is okay it's basically him he comes up an idea and then somebody works from ago that's not possible and he goes does it defy the laws of physics and then they're like well not technically we still can't do it he goes why why why and then he hits the base level belief he goes fix that and then he goes also do it by next tuesday and it's like to build a rocket it's caught it's that it's just him going does it defy the laws of physics and then they go no ago I want it done by next friday it's just crit it's just a question does it defy the laws of physics and then deadline that is the 100 anecdotes is the book just doing that again and again again so does it defy the laws of physics is a question.

But then Walter Isaacson book actually mentions a glass house and then says Elon put off building it.

I asked him a lot of things. I was questioned some of his sourcing of trusting Elon so much. I asked him all the questions about why he left out all the racist, sexist, misogynist, anti-Semitic stuff. I asked him about that and what he thought.

I think he stuck to his guns on a lot of stuff. He did cop a plea, he said, on a number of things that he got wrong, including the Starlink stuff.

And I did manage to get him to admit that he has an opinion about Elon Musk, which was one of my issues with the book.

I think, of course, last night, right before he was about to drop, Elon did another anti-George Soros thing, which was crazy. A crazy tweet about that. And I sent it to Walter. I go, Walter, he's not a Shakespearean actor. He's just, you know, just a really terrible person.

Sad and smart son solely morphs into mentally abusive father. He abhors except for with rockets, cars and more money. Often right, sometimes wrong. Petty jerk always might be crazy in a good way, but also a bad way.

Pilo babies, not Steve Jobs.

He wants to have it both ways. Walter does as a writer.

It's a pleasing concept, an impulse control button that could diffuse Musk's tweet as well as his dark impulsive actions. So impulse, impulse. There's no editor around. And the demon mode eruptions that leave rubble in its wake.

Walter is engaging in our favorite pastime right now, and that's an idolatry of innovators that excuses cruelty, that excuses anti-Semitism, excuses misogyny, excuses being, quite frankly, not an ideal father. As long as you're really fucking rich.

I just want to surprise you about the transparency.

Walter recommended that I not read it.

He had just spoken to the Russian ambassador. He just spoke to the Russian ambassador, and then he made the decision to cut Ukraine's supply lines so they couldn't fight Russia.

A fascinating book I just read was the book on Elon Musk by, uh, Walter Isaacs in the biography where, you know, Elon such an obviously charged figure right now, but just when you see what it takes, I think, you know, anytime you're, someone operates at a very high level, like Musk does running so many companies, I think you want to know how do they do it.

If you make enough of those bets, then you're kind of guaranteed to do very well for yourself, right? Enough of them will pay off and you have a fund of 15 or 20 or 25 companies every year.

I mean, if you are any one founder, your company may fail, which is partly why you get people like Elon Musk who like literally, if you read the Isaacson book on him about Elon playing poker, he would like literally just kind of go in, go all in every hand until he lose and he walk away from the table and do something else.

If you read Walter Isaacson's book, that's one of the main conclusions is he's obsessed with rushing these production schedules and pushing up timelines.

So I will answer the question. My, the non-fiction book I recently read was actually Elon Musk, biography from Walter Isaacson.

I thought it was my duty as a business podcaster to actually read it.

It definitely drags on a bit at parts

Musk effectively hegs up six companies Tesla SpaceX the boring company Neuralink X and X AI that are really pushing humanity in a new direction from the shift to renewable energy to colonizing different planets.

He has an epic sense of himself Isaacson writes almost as if he's a comic book character wearing his underpants on the outside trying to save the world.

Building mass market electric cars was inevitable, he said it would have happened without me, but becoming a space faring civilization is not inevitable. This flight was a great example of how progress requires human agency.

He loves being in fight or flight mode. He loves having his back against the wall and sometimes he'll just manufacture chaos in order to have that feeling.

Isaacson said that his favorite historical character is Napoleon.

And if you're in a book club this fall, I would bet it will be on your reading list. The book has already created so much news and the weeks leading up to its reliefs.

It's been a master class in generating buzz not it's not I've been here before it's like this book is going to be freaking juicy.

I also did see the discourse start yesterday of because I saw the the cover was released too. And it's Elon Musk trying to do like the famous Steve Jobs pose. Like he has his hands under his chin like that and everyone's saying like listen dude, you're not Steve Jobs.

And also there were some discourse about like his full head of hair too and saying like oh my so there's there's discourse around all parts of this book.

I know we are both pretty hype for Walter Isaacson's biography of Elon Musk that hits bookstores next week...but excerpts from the book have already been leaking and they are juicier than a George Apache.

According to an excerpt of the book obtained by CNN last year, Elon Musk secretly told engineers to shut off Starlink satellite communications near the Crimean coast to foil a Ukraine sneak attack on a Russian naval fleet.

Musk was spooked by the prospect of Russia retaliating with nuclear weapons, telling Isaacson Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars.

But again like...that's the alarming part is that it hinge on his opinion of the situation...and he's literally holding sway over what does and doesn't happen in this Ukrainian war.

I basically said. Troubled young man gets a lot of money and decides to take his trauma out on everybody else. Sometimes he's right, sometimes he's wrong. Mostly he just seems crazier and crazier.

It's a doorstop of a book. I think he was a little bit of an amnesis to this guy. He just typed what he said. There's a lot of sourcing problems in the book.

Walter Isaacson is an immensely prestigious author. He's written a biography of Leonardo da Vinci and of Ben Franklin, a former editor of Time Magazine. And he's been working on a biography of Elon Musk.

We ran an excerpt obviously last week. And I think in this particular case, Elon does a lot of things.

The version 1.0 is Elon Musk found out that the Ukrainians were going to attack the Russian fleet in Crimea and shut down access to his internet platform that they're depending on for targeting and a lot of other things.

The version 2.0 is Starlink was equipped to cover basically the wartime boundaries of Ukraine and that it wasn't covering Crimea.
