So there's really, really, really intense rhetoric. And I think that's definitely led to heightened polarization and concerns around political violence. I think those things are not debatable right there.

I think to think about the rhetoric is that so the way that I would sort of put this is that both parties are offering starkly different visions of the future.

And both parties have basically said that 2024 election is pivotal key and potentially could be the last election that matters.

And that's a really disconcerting place when we're in democracy, because the way I think about democracy is that democracy is where parties lose elections. And they're like, OK, we lost now, but we will fight another day.

And when parties and partisans and politicians start saying this is the main election and only election that matters, then the stakes of that get raised dramatically.

I mean we watched this story unfold in real time and that's why it was important for me to write this book because I wanted people to know not only what we saw but what people experienced.

The focus of the book is on the people directly affected by this conflict and by this attack.

I think anyone doing anything else is doing a disservice to the journalism community because our role as journalists is not to take a side it is to shine light in dark places hold those in power accountable even if it's Hamas even if it's the Israeli military and continue to tell these stories in a way that makes people care.

Absolutely and the reality is that this story is emotional you know there are a lot of politics involved in this story there's a lot of history involved in this story and people are sensitive to the realities on the ground and so it's challenging to navigate but that's part of covering what we cover and that was part of my role in writing Black Saturday to make sure that we were highlighting the many different positions and the many different people that exist on a spectrum throughout this region.

Yeah I mean it was scary to be there in the middle of these firefights and as the war was developing understanding the capabilities of Hamas I mean they have the ability to ambush forces they did they killed many Israeli soldiers that way targeting them with IEDs or anti-tank guided missiles at the beginning and RPGs and so these are all real threats that you face inside and you can be in an armored vehicle or you can be in a jeep but the threat is real and it's there and we have to sort of navigate that as we gather the story not just in Gaza but now in Lebanon.

China's behavior has only deteriorated, especially in the last three or four years.

I think Sullivan is just clinging to this notion that we can cooperate with China in certain areas and so there is I think a fundamental problem right now with American diplomacy.

So unfortunately we do need to try something new but the administration especially as it approaches its end is sticking with the old ways of doing things.

The Chinese feel comfortable dealing with predictable American leaders even if those leaders do things that the Chinese don't like what the Chinese can't deal with are unpredictable Americans and certainly President Trump was unpredictable

supporting Trump would just be out of character for Beijing and it's certainly what they they didn't do that in 2020 matter of fact one can say that they had the only real vote that counted in 2020 and they voted for Joe Biden and Joe Biden was elected

It was probably the last time Congress created a good committee. It has Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and of course, Thomas Jefferson, who writes the first draft.

And so Franklin's saying we're creating a new type of nation in which our rights come from rationality, not the dogma of a religion. But the sentence goes on, and Jefferson had it, they derive rights. But John Adams writes in, they're endowed by their creator with rights.

I love the fact that when Jefferson writes the first draft and he's very kind to Ben Franklin who edits and stuff. But then other people in the Continental Congress start editing it and he hates it.

Samuel Katz, you are a multiple New York Times bestselling author. Your new book, The Architect of Espionage, details the story of Mayor Dagan, the visionary covert veteran who just revolutionized Mossad and intel gathering and intel action really worldwide.

And you literally wrote a book about this with your point of view.

Was your idea the state quarters that people got a little excited about and a lot of people had those books and collected them?

What was different when I was MIT director is that we did a major reform, transition of the U.S. in which we greatly developed its capabilities.

Walter Isaacson is one of America's best-known historians, whose books include best-selling biographies of Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and a contributor to the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Franklin.

I made a series of films about America's Judeo-Christian roots called the Foundation of American Liberty series. And the first one was on the pilgrims.

The pilgrims did experiment with the socialism or communalism, and they realized it didn't work. They embodied this. It didn't take them long to realize that it doesn't work. It's against human nature.

And so finally, their governor who, by the way, he became their governor for years, 30 years, basically, Governor William Bradford. And he wrote about all these things in a book called A Plymouth Plantation.

And he said, wow, he said this just did not work. So what we decided to do was give people parcels of land and let them own it privately.
