There's also another book on this case that is the more of the intense read part. It's called A Light In Dark Places by Jennifer Graves.

This is written by the sister-in-law of the victim. Not the sister, but the sister-in-law. It gets insanely personal. There's a ton of family dynamics at play that I don't really include in this episode because it just felt like I was reading a diary at one point.

But there's a really good book on this case called Obsessed by M. Phelps.

I love all of his work.

So go check it out. It's a dense but really good book.

There's a really interesting book on this called The Sadist or otherwise known as the Vampire of Dusseldorf by Carl Berg.

Now the author was a trusted doctor once of the killer when he was in prison. He did countless interviews but I will say I will say I don't know if it's because it was written decades ago I don't know if this guy the author is just a horrible person as well let's stick with that one or if maybe some things were lost in translation because the original book was called The Sadist and it was released in German then it was translated into English but my friend Yelena who speaks German amongst other things was like uh yeah this is almost an exact literal translation of every single word like you know how when you're writing a book there's nuanced analogies no they translated like Google Translate so maybe things got lost in translation with this book okay so just be warned if you pick up this book you're in for a treat okay so the main...

Oh because he also takes so many digs at so many of the victims like just non-stop like the dude is like just horrendous okay if one of the victims had a job that wasn't I don't know I guess upper-class or professional or deemed worthy he just would spend like two pages just dogging on the victim so I don't know what kind of doctor this is

Then there's another book called Dying for Chocolate by Carrie Seagrave.

We have a really, really good book on this case called Buried Memories by Katie Beers and Carolyn Gustaf.

I highly recommend you read it because I don't think any coverage of this case comes anywhere near what that book does.

It's a lot of raw emotions, and it gives you a lot of insight on just how crimes really affect victims beyond just, oh, this is what happened.

But really, what's the aftermath? How do victims recover from their trauma? Can they live a normal life? What is that journey like?

I think that's like the one takeaway from the book that just hit me so hard because if Katie Beers can go through what she went through and come out a strong woman, a strong mother, a strong wife, I mean, it's just, there's a lot.

Now here was a man in his apartment hoping to recreate that, but with a 9 year old girl and the daughter of his family friend.

It's called Crime of the Century by Dennis Brio, a Florida author and journalist.

This is his fifth book. He went over 10,000 pages of transcripts. He had personal experience interviews.

This is a meticulous well-researched book on this case that was also on Mindhunters.

He teamed up with William Martin, the prosecutor that led the prosecution against Richard Speck and they wrote this book together.

It's good. Go give it a read.

the author worked with Jerry Clark which is the son of Sanford which right now doesn't mean anything but he is one of the key players in this entire plot he's also a victim

There's a really good book on this case called "Son of a Grifter" by Kent Walker.

This is actually one of the sons of the criminals that we're talking about today.

I don't even know what to say. This was a book that I finished in one sitting which is alarming and I say that a lot but this book was like 500 something pages.

Every page is like watching a dark sitcom. It's so dark, it's so gruesome but he's able to deliver every detail with like this strange witty humor that you're not expecting.

I haven't seen a lot of deep dives on this case. There's a really good A&E episode on it. Larry King interviewed the woman and this podcast episode won't be a deep dive but I highly recommend this book.

"My Sweet Angel" - by John Glatt (Such a great deep dive on this case)

He also has The Secrets in the Cellar that I read for the Joseph Fritzl case. So good.

And I'm like, that's my boy John. He has no idea that I exist. It's so detailed.

But there's a really good book on this because it's really hard to find a lot of information about this guy.

It's called Blood on the Altar by Tobias Jones.

He was really close to the family of the victims. I mean, really, really close.

He also traveled all over Italy.

So give it a read. It's called Blood on the Altar. So good.

But there's a really good book on this. It's called Stalking Mary by Eileen Bridgman Biernot. I hope that I'm saying that right.

She interviewed the sheriff's office, retired police officers that work super closely on this case.

The police that worked with the families of those involved, even the victims of the crime told the author that they learned a lot from her book.

The victims of the actual actual crime about how the back end of the legal proceedings went to the trial.

They got a better picture of how the police handled things, the courtroom drama, all of that.

Book Rec: "LOST" - by Thomas Thompson (one of my fave authors) it's so good you'll read it all in one sitting especially if it's a rainy day.

It's called RITES OF BURIAL, written by a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Tom Jackman.

So if the documentary is good, the book is even better.

I searched high and low for a deep dive on this case, which is bizarre that there isn't a lot. Even in this book and throughout like all, I think I went through like 10 freaking Google search pages.

Now obviously, we won't get as deep as the book, so go pick yourself up a copy and let's get into the case.

It's called Pure Murder by Cory Mitchell. This book is oh my god it's so well written. It's thoroughly researched. It gets into literally every nitty gritty detail.

So I mean it does get quite graphic. I'm just gonna give you a warning but they do a great job at making you feel the emotions of the victim's families. You just get wrecked.

Dead and Buried is actually one of my favorites of his. He's a Texas native. The crime takes place in Houston, Texas so there's also a lot of like setting, you know descriptions and you just envision every part of it and it's crazy.
