And in this book, what I'm attempting to do is to show that at bottom, a democratic politics, an ethical democratic politics respects difference. It respects, I noticed in your last segment, a discussion of lies. It respects a difference between truths and falsehood.

The book I wrote is about how those of us who have a role in politics and government have an ethical responsibility to attend to the health of our democratic institutions in choices that are made every day.

I got into politics shortly after the Watergate affair. I graduated from law school. And at that time, there was still the basis for that sort of dialogue and a deep belief that it was a necessity, that it was something that, in effect, those in public life owed the public, owed the voters. And that has dissipated.

These are critical tenets that underlie the flourishing of the democracy. We have to get back to that.

A combination of, I mean, a singular voice, an enormous figure in American, modern American literature and a guy who who's all of his work like hangs together this dark, stark, almost apocalyptic kind of vision anchored to this really profound moral sense and like that.

That the morality in that kind of shines through and all these very dark visions in his pieces is what made him something more than just a great wordsmith, but a really important artist in American life.

Sunday on MSNBC One night, two documentaries at 9pm Eastern to be destroyed. The story of one community's fight against book banning. My book along with four others was pulled from the shelves.

He said, well, but Hitler did some good things, Kelly said of one conversation with Trump. I said, well, what? And he said, well, Hitler rebuilt the economy. But what did he do with that rebuilt economy? He turned it against his own people and against the world. And I said, sir, you can never say anything good about the guy. Nothing.

Trump also admired Nazi officers' loyalty to Hitler, according to Kelly.

The book quotes he would ask about the loyalty issues and about how when I pointed out to him, the German generals as a group were not loyal to him and in fact tried to assassinate him a few times. And he did not know that, Kelly said in a statement.

Sund writes that top leaders from the FBI, DHS and even the Capitol Police's own intelligence division were tipped off about the attack weeks before it happened. But those warnings were never shared with him.

Sund also details failures to respond to the violence in real time, including a conference call shortly after rioters breached the Capitol where Pentagon leaders allegedly refused to deploy National Guard troops to the scene.

According to the Post, Sund writes that Lieutenant General Walter Pye told him he didn't like the optics of sending uniformed Guard troops to the Capitol, but could allow them to replace police officers at roadside checkpoints.

Sund says he later learned that at the same time Pentagon leaders were rushing to send security teams to protect the homes of military officials, none of which were under attack.

Sund, who resigned the day after the riot at the request of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also warns that many of the same internal failures that allowed the insurrection to take place have not been fixed today.

And I think that that the the founders were very clear about trying to ensure that people who are elected in an elective office swear an oath to the Constitution and put something above, you know, what they called factionalism, allegiance to a single individual.

And I think what we've seen over the last couple of years is how important that really is, how much that really matters and what we have to demand of our elected officials.
