Well it was when I was working at Interpol Washington DC and I was spending time just walking through the Smithsonian's and my mind was could you actually steal something from the Smithsonian's and I specifically thought of the Hope Diamond and I racked my brain on that circling this and you know looking at the Hope Diamond and all the security and I came up with nothing really and I said well what if it went on display what if it was loaned what if it was loaned to the British Museum could someone possibly steal it from the British Museum and that's where the idea was originally born is the Hope Diamond was going to be sent out on loan and Jack Solo was going to be in charge of its security so that that's that's how the idea first formed was just me walking around the galleries in the Smithsonian's looking for ideas.

Nancy, it takes a lot, a lot harder than a vehicle fire can usually get.

One thing that we've also found though, is if that car was driven there by someone else, the soot and the interior side of that car can actually still yield fingerprints.

If they touch that rear view mirror, that soot can act like fingerprint powder. And there may have been fingerprints on the rear view mirror or on the seat lever that moved it up or down.

So there's still a lot to be done in this investigation.

Robin Drake, that's pretty impressive, but enough about you and on to Maya.

Robin, can I tell you, I know the precise moment when my twins left this morning to go to their job. They have a job this summer. I know the moment because I haven't had my phone in my hand and I glanced down to see if they were going to be late. They were not, of course, but I glanced because I'd been hurrying them all morning. I remember that and I can look and see when I got texts from them during the day. So how does somebody not notice their child has been missing for eight months?

Robin, I have to accept and I learned this when prosecuting. I mean, I grew up in a very rural, almost idyllic childhood where we were very loved. So other lifestyles were foreign to me. But when you're investigating and prosecuting, you have to accept that other people have different lifestyles.

Robin, this is the baby's family. They're lying. They are refusing to speak to police to protect their own drug paraphernalia and drug possession in the home right there. That's just scream to you regarding red flags in their behavior.

100 percent. Nancy, the thing that keeps screaming at me on this, we talk about and I keep talking about these behavior arcs.

Joining me in addition to Karen Stark, renowned psychologist is Robin Dreek, behavior expert, former FBI special agent and author of Sizing People Up, a veteran FBI agent's manual for behavior prediction.

Also, it's not all about me. You've got a ton of awesome books. Wow. Okay, I've only got time to put out two of them. Robin Dreek.

And it was this whole thing just rings of sloppiness, potential stalker in here, and missing, you know, they found gloves in the car, lighter fluid. I mean, just it, it just rings of a lot of things going sideways in a lot of different ways.

So her car couldn't be traced back to her through the VIN number, which can endure a fire because if they got that VIN, which is basically etched onto a car, they could trace the VIN number on the car back to the owner, which would be Mercedes.

And I guarantee you Robin Drake, the killer hoped her body would be burned beyond recognition.

And I agree, Nancy. And what I went by sideways on this one, I don't think it looked very sophisticated. It looks like a potential serial stalker. Who's just setting on his course of doing horrendous things in his life. And she might want to run the earlier victims of his.

I think the victim assistance program has failed miserably, has been pointed out. And the amount of evidence, DNA evidence, video evidence, fingerprint evidence, I think should be overwhelming.

I write about that in my book Don't Be a Victim. When you're taking your children to playgrounds or parks exactly what Noema did is what you should do. I don't mean sitting in the car part. I mean taking a child to a park where there is very limited in and out. In other words go to a playground or park that has a fence around it and then you position yourself either with your child or at that opening where someone would have to go in and out not an open playground where there's a 360 degree entry and exit access.

I have poured over every document, every search warrant, every return, every witness statement that I could get my mitts on.

I managed to finish this book in one day. I practically could not put it down.

I had it in two forms. I printed out what I had and had it on my iPad so I could look at it no matter where I was.

You had me sitting in the Costco parking lot in the heat reading your book, trying to get to the next chapter before I came back home.

What do you make of what you are hearing?

Well, what I've been hearing all along is that the defense is going to be trying to get the evidence as we speak. So how can they hand it over when they don't have it yet?

And guys, remember, we're not having high tea at Windsor Castle. Jump in with your own theories and questions. The state could use them.

I'm curious as well, and you devote a lot of time to this in your book, When the Night Comes Falling, about the delay on Dylan Mortenson's part. She actually sees the killer leaving the home. There is a serious delay.

I think she was locked in a state of terror. I also believe Coburger, as he descended and passed her on his way out of the house, was locked in his own state of mania.

If Dylan had spoken out, if she had tried to penetrate the moment that he was locked in, I think she would have died.

And so Howard Bloom said that he believed Keely was the target. Now, Bloom is saying Maddie was the target and Keely was in the way.

You often have to go to state of mind as a trial lawyer.

And, you know, I think you were with us at some point at CrimeCon before last, Joe Scott, when I finally got to meet Ethan's mom, who is just amazing. No, you were not with us. But then later when you were speaking, she stood up and started talking.

Also, we are learning from Howard Bloom's new book, When the Night Comes Falling, that there is blood evidence that Ethan Chapin jumped up and confronted Brian Koberger to protect his sweetheart, Zanna Kurnodle.

I know that you have researched this so much that it may have become, you know, SOP to you. But to us, the revelations that you make in your book are, let me just say, illuminating.

In his book, Howard Bloom describes at the very beginning the austere room where the murder case was worked at police headquarters.

And he says law enforcement divided their facts, marshaled their evidence into two categories, empirical and rhetorical. Empirical, the hard evidence. Rhetorical, the why. And that's what we are doing tonight. Again, Howard Bloom, thank you for your book and for joining us again to part two of the analysis.

And we barely scratched the surface, the analysis of what you have learned about the Koberger investigation. Thank you to our other expert witnesses. But especially to you for joining us as we seek justice in our own way.

I have poured over every document, every search warrant, every return, every witness statement that I could get my mitts on.

I have flown to Idaho, to Moscow, Idaho in the midst of winter and trudged through the snow to look at the scene as best as I could to drive the route, I believe, oh yeah good times, freezing!

I still learned so much from reading Howard Bloom's book the name When the Night Comes Falling A Requiem for the Idaho Student Murders Wow, even the title made me stop and in the midst of everything we all do in regular life, you know working your children your cat your dog your mom I Managed to finish this book in one day. I practically could not put it down.

I had it in two forms I printed out what I had and had it on my iPad so I could look at it no matter where I was Howard Bloom It's amazing. You had me sitting in the Costco parking lot in the heat Reading your book trying to get to the next chapter before I came back home. I appreciate that.

I've never been accused of being kind before so I will take that with a box of salt. I want to get right to it.

And I wanted to honor them. I wanted to honor the lives, uh, that they lived.

Oh, wow. That's awful when you think about it. I know just the other day they celebrated, I guess a better word is marked, uh, Kayla Gonsalves' what would have been her 23rd birthday.

And I think that's one of my things, the favorite things I love about the book When the Night Comes Falling by Howard Bloom, B-L-U-M.

And that's how he describes it at the university. But Brian tells his father, I'm going to have the last laugh.

He was disdainful of these students. I mean, all the things that you would expect if this guy really is a quadruple murderer, he wasn't perfectly normal in the classroom.

Howard Bloom joining us, you probably know him very well by now, all of you legal eagles, because I sure do. I felt like I knew him before I ever actually met him on air because he's the author of When the Night Comes Falling, a Requiem for the Idaho Student Murders. You can find him at HowardBloom.com.

I think it's a very cynical move by the defense. What they're trying to do ultimately is buy time. Whether the trial takes place in Moscow, where it should take place, where the community needs to have its literally wounds healed, or it takes place in Boise is not going to make a difference to the verdict.

And another thing about Howard Bloom's book, When the Night Comes Falling, a Requiem for the Idaho Student Murders, he and I got a ton of hate mail online the last time he discussed his book.

Now if you disagree with him fine, but this is not fiction that he wrote in When the Night Comes Falling.

It was a extremely violent and brutal crime. Consider the suspect went into the third floor bedroom and found Maddie. I believe she was awoken from sleep. Imagine being awakened from deep sleep and then by a man above you with a knife. He slaughters her.

I think DNA is going to be really critical in this case and I think what I would like to know and I've already read one report that boyfriend has voluntarily given up his DNA that's a good sign but I would really I would really want to delve into doing certain forms on all of my potential suspects or people of interest to get their DNA again to exclude or develop that because you know there's going to be trace evidence in if they if that person drove there in their cars for example and I would love to get searched for again for people's cars that are people of interest or suspects to see if you can develop any kind of trace evidence again going back to that principle of transference of evidence where you're going to take something with you from the scene or you're going to leave something there so DNA is going to be critical.
