He's a Pulitzer Prize winning historian and presidential biographer whose latest book is His Truth Is Marching On, John Lewis and the Power of Hope.

You've written about Sandra Day O'Connor and Antonin Scalia and Sonia Sotomayor.

But when I was doing research on her for that book that came out in 2005, I spent a lot of time in the Reagan files. And that got me interested in Justice Scalia, who I thought was a real manifestation of the Reagan movement.

So I moved from her to him. And I was also intrigued by his first Italian-American heritage. Talk about family dynamics.

He was not only an only child, he was the only offspring of his generation.

So he had this intriguing family history that he brought to the bench and was always the center of attention. And I had 12 on the record interviews with him that really helped me understand him.

One is this from The Sirens of Titan, a novel he wrote in 1959 in which he said, There is no reason why good cannot triumph as often as evil. The triumph of anything is a matter of organization. If there are such things as angels, I hope that they are organized along the lines of the mafia.

Dave is out with a new memoir, Eat a Peach. The book is about his unlikely journey to becoming a Michelin star and James Beard award-winning chef. It also chronicles his upbringing and struggles with mental health.

Your book is called Eat a Peach, as we've said, and it's a portrait of a big peach being pushed up a mountain by a little black silhouetted man.

And, you know, just talking about mental illness is off putting for so many people like, oh, I don't want to hear this. This is like whatever. This is too depressing, literally. And I think that was the problem is more and more people, at least in my business, in my world suffered from some form of mental illness.

Don't be distracted by Trump's personal character. Don't spend a lot of time talking about his latest racist tweet. Talk instead about people's lives.

This is a guy who proposed a $2 trillion cut in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

He's a narcissist. The narcissist wants the camera on him no matter what. No matter what.

Make it about voters' lives, not about Trump's.

He's in court trying to take away your right to health care if you have a pre-existing condition. He's at his budget trying to cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Daniel Boorstin wrote a great book in the early 60s called The Pseudo Event about the made for TV moment.

That quote comes from the final chapter of a book I published in 2012 after that election called Why Romney Lost.

The suffrage movement gets right the fundamental idea that sex should have no relationship to political rights or political power in the United States.

The suffrage movement also suffers from an important shortcoming and that shortcoming is its relationship to racism, anti-black racism.

African-American women will be kept from the polls just like their fathers and their husbands have been kept from the polls by state laws that are used to keep black Americans away from Election Day.

Poll taxes, literacy tests, understanding clauses, and nothing in the 19th Amendment, by design, nothing in the 19th Amendment interferes with the ability of Southern states to continue to use those laws to now keep black women from exercising the vote.

African-American women are organized all throughout the movement for women's rights and women's suffrage going back to the early decades of the 19th century.

I really had a hard time with these thousand neo-Nazis and white supremacists and the things that they were saying about women, African-Americans, members of the Jewish faith, standing in front of the synagogue saying we're going to burn you and burn that synagogue like we did in Auschwitz and crowds cheering.

I got to tell you, I just how did we get to a place like this in America?

And I said to the president, I said, Mr. President, you have got to stop this hate speech. Mexicans were all rapists and drug dealers. No Muslims can come to America.

He said, you're right. We've got to get people together.

I said, you know, you need to come, Mr. President, everybody in the world is watching what's going on here around the world. They're wondering what's happened in America. You have got to come out and address the nation.
