It's set in a small Indiana town where a journalist named Margot returns to take care of her ailing uncle. But when she arrives, a young girl is kidnapped.

And there are actually similarities to an unsolved murder of another young girl from 20 years before. It was Margot's neighbor, January.

I know how to tell a story in a way that is going to keep you on the edge of your seat. And I promise you, I will not let you down with this book.

People could not put it down. They would stay up until the wee hours of the morning to finish it...we can tell that you're in the true crime space. This was a very believable investigation. And the third and my favorite is that everyone was hooked from the very first page.

And one of the things that they were all very into was Jack Kerouac. And he's a novelist who talks about just hitting the road, traveling, exploring, and finding himself. So this really resonated with her in this time in her life.

So deep that according to the Philip Island murder book Investigators noted the slashes had cut through Beth's chest and stomach muscles.

So in 2003, this guy named Steve Hodel, who's a retired LAPD detective, comes out with a book called Black Dahlia Avenger, where he accuses his own father, Dr. George Hodel, of murdering Elizabeth Short and lays out his whole case.

Across Canada, around the world, people learned that Willie Pickton might be the most prolific serial killer in North American history.

They learned that the Vancouver police had dismissed talks of a serial killer years before and had fired their own expert on the subject, a star officer named Kim Rosmo, whose work was valued in many countries, just not Vancouver.

It goes into all of that stuff in detail, what happened when and how it really all affected the case.

It's a big part of the story of how Pickton was able to do what he did over such a long period of time.

And it's also one of the driving forces behind the public inquiry that was held in 2012.

There was a lot of love in the downtown eastside.

The women who went missing during these decades, they had families and friends, parents and children who loved them and counted on them and they counted on one another too.

there are two main authors who put this theory forward about uncle John being the killer Beverly Falstad and rich little they say it was likely an act of rage and they theorize that while Abby was cleaning up his guest room maybe she said something kind of snarky to him apparently that was kind of in her personality and then he attacked her then he left the house to create an alibi and came back with the intention of killing Andrew because in his mind he knew that if Andrew came home and found his wife dead he would know that John did it he wouldn't put place bame on any of his kids like Lizzie John had a couple of changing stories about his alibi when he returned home along with his changing alibi this author has some kind of wild theories that go along with this he basically thinks that John and Bridget the housekeeper might have been having an affair and he thinks Bridget knew that he committed the crimes because she was wandering around the house she was cleaning the windows and this to them and people who believe this theory is why maybe Bridget stood by Lizzie for so long because there was a lot of circumstantial evidence against Lizzie she was burning the dress she may or may not have been there as far as Bridget knows Bridget locked all of the doors and Lizzie was the only one home but she was adamant Lizzie didn't do it was she adamant that Lizzie didn't do it because she knew who really did but he was her lover and she didn't want to give him up these authors have written an entire book dedicated to this theory called cold case closed

As author Annette McGivney describes it in her book Pure Land, when you start hiking from the Supai Trailhead at the dead end of Indian Road 18, you're roughly 80 miles from the nearest gas station.

The theory that organized crime had contracts assigned to have the three men killed, their throats were slashed ear to ear, has support among some detectives who believe there also may be a mob tie-in with the unsolved murder last March of Indianapolis salesman John C. Terhorst.

these guys were spending money they weren't making, and we couldn't understand where that money was coming from.

And on the front was this hand-drawn picture of a Cheshire cat grin, like the one from Alice in Wonderland.

And she says that the actual Cheshire cat, she's like, I think it really was more than just a character she loved. I think it was significant in what she was doing. The Cheshire cat is appearing and disappearing. And when he disappears and reappears, he shows up somewhere else. And he's smiling. And she's like, I think that what Leah was saying is like, I'm going to go away for a while and I'm going to be gone. You won't know where I am, but I will come back.

And he really did invent this genre. What does he call it? It's truthful. It's written like fiction, but it's a real story.

Yeah. And he did it from, like, the dual perspectives as well, which was so interesting. Right. For a true crime book.

So you get the perspective of the Clutter family and then you get the perspective of Hickok and Perry. And, of course, it's Truman Capote. So it's some of the best writing you'll ever come across.

And one of the things that freaked me out was the randomness of it.
