Under the Banner of Heaven A Story of Violent Faith

Well, you know, there's a Bateman that runs through that great John Krakauer book that I optioned and produced that... Under the Banner of Heaven. Under the Banner of Heaven. Thank you. It's a great read.

If you've never read it, it's a great read.

It's really tragic. But there is a Bateman that goes through that and I bet he's related. I love that book.

I thought it was an excellent book.

I think that it was an excellent book. He's... God, Crankhurst. Something else. Yeah. He's the man.

And man, I read that book a while ago. Man, it's good. It's really fascinating. It's so dark.

John Cracker talks about this in his amazing book, Under the Banner of Heaven, which if that name sounds familiar and you haven't read the book, it's because this story of a murder in the Mormon church also became a series starring Andrew Garfield. Apparently it's very good. I haven't seen it. I haven't seen it, but it is on my list to watch.

So the book has actually been a huge help when we were researching these two episodes. And John was actually a massive part of the investigation into Warren Smith's murder and into Warren Jeffs himself. So we will definitely be coming back to him next week.

So in Under the Banner of Heaven, he tells us the story of fundamentalist Mormon girl Debbie Palmer. When Debbie was 14, she married the 57-year-old leader of her sect. She was his sixth wife and she instantly became stepmother to 31 children. Most of whom were older than her. Yep.

Because he knew how to age the paper. He knew how to age the ink. ... Then you watch things like Under the Banner of Heaven, Utah, Mormons, the Lafferty letters ...
