My first book, don't burn this book, was a defense of classical liberalism.

We had an Australia tour planned for Don't Burn This Book.

I did not write the books as uh as well I can't say I didn't I didn't write the intention of writing them was not as a money maker they did make money in the book sold well and that is great um the intention of writing the books was that I felt like I had something to say especially if you don't burn this book jordan kept telling me that I should write a book and then the opportunity presented itself um

I dedicated my first book to Ben Affleck because he went on "Real Time with Bill Maher" at that time with Sam Harris, and they were fighting about religion and everything. And it was like one of my wake-up moments because he was so insane and ridiculous and over the top and he was people think he was on steroids because he was training for Batman.

I did that. You're kidding? I did not know that. Any regrets right, by the first page of that book right? This one that "Don't Burn This Book"? Oh my gosh, look at this okay. I need to burn my glasses back on to see this. Okay, I'm going to take this home yeah. But so you haven't signed it?

I've told, and I've written about, in Don't Burn This Book, I wrote a bit about my story on 9-11.

When I wrote Don't Burn This Book, my first book, I sold about 30,000 copies, I think, in the first week, which should have been number two, I think, on the New York Times bestseller list. They put me at number 11 because they just lie about their whole thing.

when Don't Burn This Book came out we should have been number two on the New York Times bestseller and the sales numbers are very obvious because it's sales so they can't fake it like the sales numbers come through but then the New York Times just re-jiggers their list however they see fit.

I think I mentioned once, I've sketched out the basic idea for the third book and once we did, it was don't burn this book, don't burn this country.

You can kind of think as to what the title of the next one might be.

And I do have a way of sort of, I think bringing it all together.

It's very much in line with some of the things that I've been talking about over the last week or so related to culture and politics and our behavior when you live in a system that seemingly is always gonna drag you sort of what you can do.

So it's a little bit of an extension off the middle book.

I was going to be going on a book tour for Don't Burn This Book, my first book, which obviously got canceled because of covid.

And I wrote about this in Don't Burn This Book. I believe in a strong military so that we don't have to use it.

And when I wrote the first two books, we actually especially in Don't Burn This Book, which was the first book, obviously I had way more related to my family. It started becoming more of an autobiography.

I've mentioned it here or there, or I wrote about it a little bit in the first book, don't burn this book, but I lived in New York City during 9-11.

And then I just didn't have enough time for the Don't Burn This Country tour to to do the Europe thing because the book came out in April.

I was supposed to be on a book tour for Don't Burn This Book. That's how crazy fast these last few years have gone.

Yesterday I ended the show by playing this little minute and a half or two minute segment from the audio book of Don't Burn This Book, where I laid out what my feelings on abortion are. And as you know, I describe myself as begrudgingly pro-choice.

I do not deny that when the sperm meets the egg, that that is the genesis of life. There has to be a beginning.

But really where we're at at this point is that half the country now seems to want to burn the thing down. And another half of the country is sort of feeling good, like, oh, maybe a little bit of the power was restored to the people.

Before this process started, I'd always been solidly pro-choice though in the last two years or so, I've begun to describe myself as begrudgingly pro-choice after learning more about the biology of gestation and the process of abortion and seeing the left fetishize it in a way that I'm not comfortable with.

My position of 12 weeks puts the focus on the mother up until a point, then says the government must protect the life of the child beginning at that point.

My belief is that the only way to negotiate this complex issue is to make a compromise even if it will most likely upset people on both sides.

In other words, the belief in individual freedom must extend to having confidence in people making the best decisions for themselves even if we personally believe they are ethically and morally wrong.

But I would say that humans need to believe, period.

But I think belief is so connected to what it is to be human, to be a fully functioning human that you will believe in something whether you believe it or not.

And I think one of the things that's been really interesting over the last couple of years is that people of faith, and it doesn't matter, the specific faith doesn't matter that much actually.

But there was a certain set of people who were just like, I believe in something else, something other than oh I pick up the New York Times and my God I have the Bible handed to me every day and here's what reality is because it ain't reality.

at the end of my first book, Don't Burn This Book, I made an argument related to God and belief connecting some of the classic liberal beliefs to that because I saw what you're now talking about.

when I wrote Don't Burn This Book, the first book, that when I took the begrudging pro-choice position that a lot of you wrote to me that you love the book and you just disagree disagreed with me about abortion.

Don't Burn This Book really was, hey, these are my ideas. These are the classically liberal principles that I try to live by. I also talked a little bit about my own evolution, obviously related to belief and my political evolution, of course, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I wrote about it in my first book, Don't Burn This Book. I suffered from alopecia about five years ago for about two years. And it was quite horrific.

it's sort of part two I would say probably in what will be a trilogy actually because in Don't Burn This Book I sort of laid out what my beliefs are and the framework that I think is the best framework for an America or a Western society to be free and of course those are the classically liberal positions that I hold

This book is well what do you do once you have those right ideas in the face of some really awful stuff, say an administration that won't say that communism is bad.

i would say you have to fight it like you have to because if you are a teacher and you know it's the wrong thing to teach and you still do it it's like at the end of the day like what are you as a human

i don't know how you could ever send a kid to a public school at this point meaning a public college

i would say the more important thing to do is really like try to i don't know how you do this exactly as a 17 year old but if but if you really tried to think about your life like what kind of person do you want to be what what work do you want to do like what what is it that you enjoy doing

i talk about this in in chapter nine of don't burn this book um my experience with jordan peterson now i was an adult at that point and it was sort of an accidental mentorship because we just happened to be touring together but like find someone who's modeling a life and a and a career that that's something that you could aspire to

he actually really the only chapter in in don't burn this book that that i really took any sort of outside help on was we really really got into it on the abortion chapter and he really did help me shift some some stuff over there

Don't Burn This Book came out in Spain a couple weeks ago. It's been number one. It's actually been the number one nonfiction book for quite some time now since it came out which is absolutely great

I'm really psyched about the book because it really is the next version of that was my defense of liberalism the liberals have failed liberalism what do we do now I think there's some new ideas in there I'm really I'm really proud of it I limited the Star Wars references I think it's the right blend of like info and humor and all that good stuff

one of the things I really missed about Don't Burn this book was that I was supposed to be on a tour I had like a 50 city tour that was going to be you know basically all of May into June and then we were working on a European tour and we were working on an Australian tour and I was gonna just go to wherever I was literally going to go wherever that's what I said to the guys if someone wants me somewhere I will show up and talk about this book that's what I want to do

the point of that book by that handsome fella was that when you say, Don't Burn This Book, it's like the things that I laid out in that book were basic, I think moderate for the most part, moderate positions.

that politics alone isn't everything so I'm going to expand on that a bit but really try to make this book much more about action than ideas

People say that I look a little bit like Chris Pratt. I get that a lot especially with this when he's going with the half shaven look and also Chris Pratt is a conservative who's hated by the Hollywood elite. I can appreciate that so Chris Pratt, you're playing Dave Rubin in Don't Burn This Book, The Movie.

And by the way I am working on the second book right now and we'll announce some more stuff on that in the next little bit.

I was holding back a little bit on some of my feelings about Trump and some of the other things because I had written Don't Burn This Book a year before it came out in in April

Don't Burn This Book came out in April in the midst of the quarantine and the lockdown and everything and I was supposed to be on tour and we were we had sold out a bunch of theaters and it was it was going to be awesome and I love and I deeply miss going out on tour

the book had been written for about a year so I had been sitting on all those ideas for a year so the idea is when I started doing all this press and everyone would start talking about the book and and all this stuff and all the craziness with the left and the difference between liberals and leftism it was all stuff that I had been thinking about for years I had been writing about and then suddenly it was like super relevant

I called it Don't Burn This Book and then they were burning down the stores that the book was in and everything else

It was we coordinated with the launch of Don't Burn This Book.

I was still able to continue the show, launch my first book, do tons of media appearances, and connect with some old and some new friends.

I think I've been able to communicate ideas in a good way and I've paid the price for that.

Actually one of the things that I write about in Don't Burn This Book is that if you're ever going to take just a week off of social media that Christmas week basically rolling into the New Year's like that's kind of the time to do it right to focus on food, family, friends, remember those things.

Penguin Random House which is my publishing company by the way they're the people that published don't burn this book the Canadian imprint they were they were having all sorts of problems because Jordan Peterson's new book is coming out and some of the some of the children who work there were very upset and they were crying because Jordan's a white supremacist and the rest of it which of course is the reverse of truth and it shouldn't matter whether an author is controversial or not because it's about how many books can this person sell and everything else so we get his feelings on that and much more so clip one is up and then the rest will be out throughout the week and of course the full episode is up on Ruben report dot com already

what put you on my radar was a few months ago a whole bunch of people started sending me a video of you talking about your your adventure and your journey and everything else and you happened to to mention that you read Don't Burn This Book and that it helped you in some way which is I don't even have the words to explain my gratitude for that I mean it's just beyond imagination considering what you've lived through
