The Maltese Falcon

Think Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon. Ed was a solidly built 60ish guy with a penchant for suits and cowboy boots.

Well, the first, uh, sort of definition, I think example wise is the Maltese Falcon is kind of always, if you, if you look up anything about the MacGuffin, they'll usually kind of point to the Maltese Falcon film. Yeah. As one of the best examples. Uh, it was a novel and then later a movie, um, where Humphrey Bogart played Sam Spade and the MacGuffin is the Maltese Falcon.

It's this statuette, uh, of a bird in the movie, but it's really not about that Maltese Falcon, the object. It's about what happens, uh, to try and get ahold of this thing basically.

The Maltese Falcon is the point. This is the object that does everything in the movie. All of the actions are based on getting their hands on the Maltese Falcon. There would be no plot whatsoever if the Maltese Falcon didn't exist.

Author Dashiell Hammett introduced the character of San Francisco detective Sam Spade in his 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon. Hammett subsequently featured Sam Spade in a few short stories and Humphrey Bogart immortalized the detective in the movie version of The Maltese Falcon in 1941.

He shows up like in the Great Escape. The Maltese Falcon.

The Maltese Falcon, that's what I think of when I hear that kind of villain.

Later Hammett would fictionalize this incident in his best-known book, The Maltese Falcon, in which private detective Sam Spade solves a case of a stolen figurine on board the passenger ship La Paloma.
