Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland; or, Stories of C, G, and H. Illustrated by John Hookham

You do the readings. When you say the first reading from the book of John? You don't say it's the first reading. A reading. Yeah, a reading from the book of John.

I'm reminded of the charming illustrated book series by George Gamow, Mr. Tompkins in I guess Wonderland.

And so I remembered both Brian Green and I when we grew up, we read a book series called Mr. Tompkins. And Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland. And this was a brilliantly conceived series. It's for curious kids where Mr. Tompkins occupies a world where the laws of physics are slightly different so that things that will otherwise be hidden from you in our world are completely manifest in his world.

One of the stories I remember they changed the value of Planck's constant to be something that produced macroscopic phenomenon. So you would walk... Macroscopic quantum phenomenon. Macroscopic quantum phenomenon. So you'd walk through a doorway and then you would refract. The way light would do it.

Or you play pool in the pool hall and you hit the cue ball and it passes through the ball that you're shooting at. Quantum tunnels. Yeah, that'd be like a really cool universe. It'd be a totally cool universe.

Oh, you mean Mr. Tompkins' Wonderland? Yeah, that was from, I think, the 1940s or something like that. And yeah, it was a wonderful series of books in which he imagined a universe in which somehow human beings are the same, but the constants of nature have a different value.

So Mr. Tompkins is doing the kinds of things that Paul Rudd is doing, but with not quite the same special effects.

So it's not just that it's like also that we need to be seen. Yeah. I think that came out came about too. And I think that's so interesting what you said and I totally agree. And I think it also came about like as we were able to get more things like like when you were able to just get whatever music you want like the fact that we can just play any song we want to listen to right now. Like like you can get anything like tangible. So then it becomes like, well what are the intangible things that we can't get? I want those now. I have everything else. So it becomes this thing of like, what do you think about me? Like everyone's just very self centered. And so this is like a very kind of heady thing. But like I agree that it's just moving forward from like all these tangible things that we're satisfied on now because we're so kind of saturated with all of it. Now we're like, what else can I get that I need? Oh, I need affirmation. I need love. I need respect. I need this. So I need to get it from you at whatever means necessary. It doesn't mean it doesn't matter if I'm humiliated in the process. Exactly. We'll hang out with you if you suck our dicks. Exactly. That's what it is. Exactly. That is so sad. Wow. That's really tragic. I bet you guys had great dicks though. I've always had a large dick.

Actually, I was gonna shit on myself in my... I've been reading, Ted.

I love thinking about the Word of God with John chapter 1, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word is Christ.

He basically, after the book of John teaches, He teaches in almost every chapter of the book of John something about His relationship with God.

You'll find, I think there are only two chapters where you won't find some verses where Christ talks about His relationship with God.

By the way, John chapter ten, John chapter eight, John chapter nine... John never brings up Sadducee.

Jesus answered them. Psalms 82, six. Is it not written in your law? I said ye are gods.

And I want to just preach a few moments this morning, but I want to go to the book of John chapter 21.

I'll begin reading with verse. Let's go to verse, um, John 21. Let's go to verse 24. This is the disciple who testifies of these things and wrote these things. And we know that his testimony is true.

And there are so many other things that Jesus did listen to this, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
