Attachment, Trauma and Consensual Nonmonogamy
The book was highlighted by Jessica Fern, who praised it as essential for grasping how attachment styles and trauma affect consensual non‑monogamous relationships. In the episodes, both Fern and the hosts cited it as a primary resource for navigating polyamory and improving relational security. The discussion emphasized its practical insights into attachment insecurity, legal complexities, and personal growth, reflecting a strong endorsement.
Jessica Fern strongly recommends this book for understanding attachment styles, trauma and consensual non-monogamy. Fern states that attachment styles are a vital part of understanding why people have challenges with non-monogamy.
I started to really just have primarily individuals, couples, or even polycules that were non-monogamous. And I would see the challenges they were going through. And one of the main challenges was attachment insecurity or attachment ruptures that were happening. And so I was like, okay, this is what they're bringing to me. And then when I would share with them what attachment styles are and how we can work to become more secure, it made such a difference.
And one of the first ones was him and I would have said we were securely attached and he especially had secure attachment. And when we opened up, he went, I mean, panic attack anxious.
So it really awoke me to the visceral nests of attachment. And then through my own experiences of dating and even seeing like, oh, I'm not going to have structural security with this partner because I have a partner and a kid and they have a partner that they live within a kid. So what's going on within me and feeling a lot of disorganized tendencies from my past show up. Interestingly, a lot of step-parent trauma.
So I think that's a big part of it or I think of someone like Esther Perel's work who, you know, mating in captivity, right? She was bringing awareness to this idea of what are we doing? You know, that we're expecting what we used to get from a village in terms of relational, experiential, social needs, you know, and we're expecting all of that now in one person. And we're seeing the divorce rate so high.
And it's interesting because it's one thing to say polyamorous people are protected class, which is necessary, right? To say you can't get fired because you're polyamorous. You can't be denied housing because you're polyamorous. But how that then extends to, well, can we have multiple legal marriages? Can we buy group insurance for the polycule? I mean, people are really getting creative or how do you have a trust with multiple people and what's the legal divorce of three people versus two people?
The book explores polyamory, attachment, and opening up. It was mentioned as a resource for understanding and navigating polyamorous relationships.
This week we'll also be releasing a bonus content conversation between me and Jessica Fern, author of Polysecure and Polywise, two books that explore polyamory, attachment, and opening up.
Terminology, books like Polysecure, Jessica Fern and of course the Ethical Select. That's the bible right?
I know enough now because of books like the ethical slut because of poly secure because of more than one I know how to navigate I know what I have to offer a relationship my identity in itself I know is valuable and definitely worth a certain type of person

A Deeper Dive Into Navigating Open Relationships
The book was highlighted during a conversation with Jessica Fern, who explained that she and her husband wrote it to share their personal challenges and attachment experiences while transitioning to a polyamorous relationship. The discussion emphasized the book’s focus on navigating open relationships and the emotional hurdles involved, particularly the anxiety that can arise even for securely attached partners.
Jessica Fern co-authored this book with her husband, Dave, which delves deeper into navigating open relationships. It contains stories of their challenges and experiences of opening up their marriage to become polyamorous.
Dave and I talk about, we share a lot of stories in Polywise about our challenges that we went through and he's very explicit about some of his, but one of the first ones was him and I would have said we were securely attached and he especially had secure attachment. And when we opened up, he went, I mean, panic attack anxious.
My Life as the Nonbinary Millennial Child of a Polyamorous Family
The book was highlighted as the first memoir to explore multi‑generational polyamorous families from a child's point of view, offering a rare perspective that many listeners had asked about. Whit Missildine introduced the author as a leading sex educator and advocate, while the author herself explained that the memoir answers the common question of what it’s like to grow up in such a family and offers encouragement to younger readers. The discussion underscored the book's groundbreaking nature and its relevance to the podcast’s audience.
This is the first book written about non-monogamous families, especially from the perspective of a child growing up in one.
This book is meant to answer the question that I have been asked endlessly throughout my life. That question, oh my gosh, what was it like growing up this way?
I was able to internally tell my younger 24-year-old self living out of my car, driving up and down the West Coast, you're going to be able to make it. You're going to get to go to places and be welcomed.
It was described as the first book written on multi-generational polyamorous families from the child's perspective.
Co is the premier second generation sex educator and advocate for non-monogamous families. Their award-winning involvement in sex education, LGBTQ activism, public health advocacy, and work within polyamorous and kink communities began taking professional shape in 2005 as a peer educator working in high schools. Subsequently co has served the community through public speaking, media appearance, executive administration, and as a frequent guest on some of your favorite polyamory podcasts. Their memoir This Heart Holds Many is the first book written on multi-generational polyamorous families from the child's perspective.
The hosts introduced Neil Woods and noted that the book detailed his personal experiences with the War on Drugs in Britain. It was highlighted as one of two works by the author, mentioned alongside another title. The discussion was informational rather than a strong endorsement.
Neil Woods described his book "Good Cop, Bad War" as being about his own experience and the War on Drugs in Britain.

The book was mentioned when the guest described how she first encountered it through her mother’s reading and then borrowed it herself, noting that it introduced her to ideas of punishment and pain that she found appealing in relation to her own feelings of inadequacy. Both episodes highlighted how these themes resonated with her experiences of perfectionism and self‑disgust, framing the book as a personal influence rather than a recommendation.
The book was read by the guest's mother; the guest subsequently borrowed and read it, and it introduced her to the ideas of punishment and pain in a sexual context, which she found attractive. She related this to her own feelings of inadequacy and the desire for external control.
My mom was reading Fifty Shades of Grey and whenever she wasn't home, I would steal the books and read as much as I possibly could. That kind of introduced to me the idea of punishment and pain, which I also found attractive because I liked the idea of if I wasn't acting in this ideal way that somebody wanted me to be, that that could be fixed with physical punishment rather than just feeling disgusted with myself or just, like, internalizing those feelings of not being good enough.
A Memoir
The title was discussed when the author recounted her teenage years as a political prisoner during the Iranian Revolution, describing the torture and fear she endured. The conversation highlighted her emotional numbness and the looming threat of further horrors. It was presented as a vivid personal account rather than a formal recommendation.

I'm so glad that I was so numb emotionally, but even though I was numb, there was that fear. There was that fear that everything and anything horrible was imminent.
