And he flashed a paperback book at me. I came into his room, and he said, hey, I was just in a bookstore, and I saw this book, and I thought of you, so I bought it. And he said, I don't know who this woman is, and I don't know what this book is about, but the title.

And he held it up, and it was a book that's now very, very well known. At the time, it wasn't Pema Chodron's book, The Wisdom of No Escape.

And he said, you get to sit with us. We're just going to sit with this as long as we need to. There is wisdom. There is wisdom in not trying to escape it. Be with it, but be with it as openly as you can, and trust that some things will shift.

I remember the first Fifty Shades of Grey book was really popular at that time. She tried to sneak the book into the bookstore.

I think that I was able to do so much thinking around what memory means and what having a self means.

I had been corrected years and years before when I had first tried to write that story and I had abandoned it feeling like maybe I'm wrong like maybe I don't know what's real and what's not real.

Growing up, my aunts and uncles would always tell me stories about you know I saw your grandfather move clouds and this is what it looked like.

The feedback that I got was oh this is fiction this is not something that actually happened. There's like a colonialist mindset in the United States of thinking only our culture is correct or only our culture is the truth and everything else that deviates from that is made up or it's fiction.

And her debut novel Fruit of the Drunken Tree was the silver medal winner in first fiction from the California Book Awards.

I think because my hand was slapped when I tried to write about my grandfather I was like okay fine I will write about this other wild thing that happened and even though that's a true story I'm gonna tell it as a fake story. So I fictionalized it.

And so I got this book called Combating Cult Mind Control by Steve Hassan and he had been in a group called The Moonies and it was virtually identical to my indoctrination process. You could just change the names.

She called them her guides.

And she started to discover that she was getting these messages kind of channeled through her and she discovers entities from the other side, you know, that people have passed on.

And so she had written these eight or nine books on all these metaphysical topics.

So she meets with Freddie and ends up including Freddie in her latest book, which is called Aliens Among Us and has four chapters specifically on Freddie and Freddie and his friends and his mission and work that he's doing here.

And at this point, the group has finally been named. Up to this point, we didn't really have a name. But when the Ruth Montgomery book came out, the Aliens Among Us, we incorporated and called ourselves Eternal Values.

And when I was seven, she took me to see Ionesco's Rhinoceros.

And in particular, I connected to the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

Vampires are magical creatures who are above the rest of the world. They were free. They were free to kill people. They were free to fuck people. They were free to do whatever. There was male and female relationships. There was female-female relationships. There was male-male relationships.

There was poly relationships. There were all these things and all these different ways to love that I had never even thought of, that I never thought were possible. And they didn't feel guilty about it. And they only found acceptance.

And that's really what I connected with in the books was that there was this sense of freedom and acceptance in the monstrous. I felt that I was monstrous. I had been told my whole life that I was horrible, that I was ugly, that I was horrible. I was unlovable.

Then in these books, they're monstrous, but they're loved and they're magical and they don't care what God has to say about them. They took the darkness and they made it magical.
