And this isn't a book about Fox News. This is when you get down to it. This is a book about Americanism.

And it goes back in part to book nine of Plato's Republic, which we just recorded an episode about this on Young Heretics.

And Plato says something kind of, one of those mind blowing insights that you carry with you, which is that the tyrant, the man who rules over a city is actually the most enslaved man alive.

Your professors are buffoons. Your cultural critics are vulgarians. Your priests are cowards and your journalists aren't fit to unlace the sandals of those professors, critics and priests.

I'm talking about the people who are supposed to be the grownups, the parent class.

It is a sin for an old person in authority to coerce a young person into compromising his integrity. It is a double sin to do that to young men, because while integrity is good for both sexes, it is the essence of being a man.

The good news is this, the priests and teachers and artists of all the generations past are still right here, walking by your sides for thousands of years. The best of them have been working in the midst of life's suffering and evil to write books and compose music and develop religion that are still lying at your feet, like a bright trail through the present darkness. It is up to you to do what the old men have not done for you. Read those books, listen to that music, practice that religion, follow that trail. It will lead you back to who you really are.

And here's what's in my background that led me to be kind of familiar with trauma and to not completely freak out whenever it hits and so on and so forth.

So I thought it was very insightful and personal and needed. Thank you for doing it.

Well, there does seem to be something weird going on. I mean, I realize he has COVID, but there was this other video that my team cut. I don't have time to play it, but you can see him for a full 40 seconds staring with a big eye and he doesn't blink. And it really does sort of have the feeling of is he on something? Because that's not normal to go 40 seconds without maybe that's some reaction to the COVID medication or something. But I think look, most of us either have elderly parents or elderly grandparents. We've seen people who are, you know, getting into the late 70s, into their 80s. And I don't want to reuse the Dennis Miller joke about Ronald Reagan, where I don't even let my dad use the TV remote control anymore. I don't want him having his finger on the button. But you know, the presidency is a really tough job and it's not the sort of job where you can organize around that. Apparently the closest the White House has ever come to admitting that Biden's age is an issue was when they said he couldn't do the Europe trip and the Middle East trip back to back. And it would have been 10 days. And look, that's, you know, 10 days of overseas travel is a lot for anybody. But on the other hand, they keep telling us the president is in tip top shape. I think probably the most glaring and irritating example of this was the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, saying that she has a hard time keeping up with Biden. I think she's in her early 50s. She seems like she should be fired. I mean, don't tell me you can't keep up with a mere oxygen area. Come on. You know, it's that you know, it's that saying about peeing on my leg and tell me it's raining. You know, that's Judge Judy.

I'm reading, have you ever read Alone in Berlin?

It's a novel written by Hans Falada.

And he wrote it in 1947 and died short. He didn't even live to see it published, but it takes place in 1940 in Berlin.

And it's about the working class in Berlin who weren't on board with the party and they were trying to kind of, it's based on a true story of this couple who were putting postcards all over Berlin and basically resisting Hitler in whatever way they could.

And there's this insane line in the novel where the wife is talking to the husband when he's telling her about this idea. And she says, 'Isn't this so small? Isn't this enough?' And he said, 'Whether it's small or large, it will still cost us our life if we, if anyone finds out.'

My gosh, you knew how to hit your book at exactly the right time.
