And they used his texts, dozens of his texts around the time he purchased the gun. Texts that prosecutors said suggested he was out buying drugs. For example, I'm at the 7-11. Prosecutors said it was consistent with his practice of going to this particular 7-11 to buy drugs. So they really had a very buttoned down closing argument. All the corners neatly folded in.

And he certainly relapsed as he admitted in his memoir.

But like a lot of addicts, when they go to rehab, when they get clean for a while. They're ecstatic and they feel, that's it, I've done it. It's behind me. And that's their case, that he was in that moment and sincerely believed he was not addicted to drugs.

And from his own audio book recording of his memoir, "Beautiful Things." In all of this evidence which came in through this FBI agent, Hunter Biden, because this is part of his recovery, comes clean about his addiction, that he was wildly addicted to crack cocaine. It really is so intense to hear it.

He's a Marine. I mean, he's got an impressive life story even at just age 39.

And he felt like this kind of conduit to this part of the country. And yet he did not consider himself like a Trump supporter. At one point he said, I can't stomach Trump.

I think he's noxious and is leading the white working class to a very dark place. I mean, what changed?

It was a massive bestseller. And when Trump ends up winning, a lot of folks turn to J.D. Vance to try to explain the phenomenon, explain the support.

As a matter of fact, ABC News on election night in 2016, after Trump was declared the winner, we actually called Vance, who happened to be at that point living in Manhattan, and you know, roused him out of bed. And he came into the studio at about like two o'clock in the morning as we were, you know, broadcasting.

He said, yeah. He said, yeah. But once he got to know me, he was all in. And this is something important about Trump.

He, you know, can be quite thin skinned to criticism, obviously, and hit back very hard. But he loves a convert. And the harder you were against him, the more excited he is when you, you know, come on and are totally on board. And that's J.D. Vance.

Vance was a fierce Trump critic, calling the then candidate cultural heroine. And even in one text message to a former roommate, he called Trump America's Hitler.

I mean, he was harshly critical, but he is as all in as anybody, certainly anybody on his potential VP list or anybody in Congress. He is all in for Donald Trump. We've almost seen him kind of transform in real time as his political ambitions grew.

And he's taken on these much tougher right wing stances, whether it's on abortion or other social issues.

Part of what led the governor of Arkansas to this campaign is a book she read called The Anxious Generation. And it is a very popular book right now among parents and educators.

So in her memoir these excerpts came out early you know to book reviewers and such and it came out that she talked about shooting and killing her 14-month-old hunting dog and training that she felt that was a threat to her family and just not very good at what she got it for well number one Joe Biden's dog has attacked 24 secret service people so how many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog.

It also came out in more recent days there's an anecdote about her claiming she have met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and folks are saying that actually isn't accurate now her book publishers actually removing that anecdote from her e-book from the new printings of the book and from the audiobook which she herself recorded and it was that old Truman quote right if you want a friend in Washington get a dog I think we have to update this a little bit like if you want to guarantee you have no friends or donors bragg about killing that dog because not just Democrats have turned against her the Biden campaign folks you expect but Republicans even folks who are kind of far right Twitter provocateurs are saying oh I would never do that to my animal right and disavowing her which is no good when you have to go on TV and essentially bat cleanup which is what she was doing on CBS over the weekend
