Mehdi Hassan, who's sitting there nodding the entire time and has his own, it was his show on MSNBC, has his own, let's just say history of making comments about Republicans in very derogatory ways.

And I talk a lot about the phrase good faith in the book and about the need.

I was gonna write a chapter in the book on when to walk away from argument.

I say that openly in the book.

I haven't had a response to a tweet like that from kind of crazy right wingers for a long time.

I think it's because they read it as some kind of admission of a conspiracy by the liberal media to stamp out this story when in fact they're very opposite.

So the point of the book is to say here is a skill set that you can learn that should help you win any argument you choose to win.

I actually think the more important than anything else, I have a chapter on it, is confidence building.

Unless you have confidence, you can't do anything. You can't listen. You can't speak. You can't engage. You can't take a position.

One of the reasons I wrote the book was because I wanted to equip ordinary people, good people, good faith actors, decent people with the skills and the rhetorical tricks and techniques to push back against the bullies and the bigots and the authoritarians and the gaslighters.

And I have a whole chapter in the book about how you deal with what I call gish gallopers, people who just want to overload you with BS.

So I'm trying to equip people with the skills to say, you know what? When I'm confronted with someone who lies or cuts me off or tries to talk over me or gaslights, I have the skills, I have the rhetorical techniques going back centuries to be able to say, no, no, we're going to speak out.

It's a disclaimer I have at the very start of the book. I can barely win an argument with my wife. I argue for a living and it's been a long time since I've won an argument at home.

In 1917, over 100 years ago, Arthur Balfour, the British foreign secretary, a card-carrying anti-Semite, a man who had denounced the evils of Jewish immigration into the UK, a man who referred to Jews as an alien and hostile people, he issued his Balfour Declaration. Well, let's be clear about that quote and what was changed or at least misrepresented because I think this is going to give a really strong indication for what is coming out of the opposition as a whole. We were told he'd referred to Jews as alien and hostile. In fact, that he was therefore an anti-Semite.

He said, mitigate the age-long miseries created for Western civilisation by the presence in its midst of a body which it too long regarded as alien and even hostile, but which it was equally unable to expel or absorb.

I'm going to teach you how to win every argument that you want to win. Just because I'm teaching you how to win every argument doesn't mean you have to try and win every argument.

I genuinely believe unless you have tougher, more challenging conversations, we're not gonna be able to save democracy. We're not gonna be able to save our media. We're not gonna be able to save our public spaces.
