While reporting on the highest court in the land for the past 30 years, Joan wrote four biographies of Supreme Court justices, including most recently, The Chief, The Life and Turbulent Times of Chief Justice John Roberts.

We talked about her new book on Chief Justice John Roberts, Partisanship on the Court, Who is the smartest justice on the bench today? And which two justices used to date in college?

My basic philosophy in writing about the Supreme Court has always been, this is your Supreme Court.

I want people to learn about what happens at the top of the third branch of government. I want people to be intrigued by things. I want people to feel like they know these justices a little bit more and pay more attention to the rulings that will be coming soon as we head into June.

I won't be content to get a good job by getting a good education. I want to get the best job by getting the best education.

He never made an enemy who mattered.

He was so good. Well, first of all, he had argued 39 times before the Supreme Court. His preparation was flawless. He knew how to handle any kind of question. Highly intelligent. He's got a very quick wit, as we observed earlier about the way he could parry certain questions, turn them into soft jokes.
