The Pas-de-Calais was in some ways the obvious choice because it was certainly a lot nearer to Germany than the beaches of Normandy, but it was extremely heavily defended and the Germans also thought the Allies were going to land there.
And so Normandy was an attractive option, partly because of the beaches, these long sandy beaches, which would allow huge numbers of infantry to come ashore.
And also it was slightly less well defended than the Pas-de-Calais area.
