It's not my book that did this. It's that people wanted there to be attention on this. And the book was a focusing event.

So I am Kyla Scanlon. I'm an author and an economic content creator. So my first book in this economy came out last year, and I make videos across social media, have written for the New York Times opinion section, Bloomberg opinion.

So I wrote this book when I was eight years old about a penguin and wrote books all through growing up.

And so like when the opportunity came to write a book, I love books.

And then number two, a lot of my social media videos are responding to the news. I try to do as much education as I can within 90 seconds. But books are static.

I think a lot of the knowledge that is in the book is static. And so I wanted a place for people to go where they could use it as a reference guide. Like each chapter is relatively standalone and you can like read the inflation chapter without having to read the labor markets chapter.

And I just wanted something that people could go to outside of the noise of social media. Although, of course, you should read the inflation and the labor market chapters together because it's all a piece.

I love this conversation. Kyla brings a refreshing perspective that we think you'll enjoy.

I have to say I love this title. In This Economy, How Money and Markets Really Work.

And I think too, like I spent a lot of time trying to understand the history of the economy because I felt like that was really important to include in some of the beginning chapters. Like how did we get here?

By the way, I see your book in this economy. Number one bestseller in the business encyclopedias.

And then I'm reading The Material World by Ed Conway. And that's been really fun.

We speak with Kyla Scanlon, educator and author of In This Economy.

I do a lot of economic policy work. So talking about housing, talking about inflation. And I get to have the opportunity to interview policymakers to translate their ideas to the public.

I mean, I think markets are more so responding to the Federal Reserve right now. So Jerome Powell came out yesterday, basically hinted at the idea of a rate cut potentially happening in July. And of course, you know, the stock market is extremely excited about that.

One of the firms just released a buy rating on Google and a sell rating on Meta because they're saying that Google is going to gain steam again.

And so I think, you know, the two things that the tech sector is going to have to focus on moving forward is cybersecurity.

I think for tech, like just to focus on the real world and then ensuring that the technology isn't released on the dark web is going to be how they continue to add value moving forward because investors have already placed so much faith and hope in these companies that they're going to have to show them that there's a world beyond, you know, apps and monetizing search.
