Today on the show, we're re-airing one of my favorite episodes of the last few years... about his book, Knife.

And his latest book, Knife, is about the attack. It's about his life. It's about his marriage. It's about his children.

I want to talk about that and I wanted to have you read it; it's from Knife.

When the last few books were published people finally stopped asking me about the attack on the Satanic Verses and now the knife defines me.

The most upsetting thing about the attack is that it has turned me once again into somebody I have tried very hard not to be.

I love this book. It's a beautiful work of introspection.

I feel like I know now how your mind works.

I mean, it's, what I felt is that it starts off, there's a love story which turns into a murder story which turns back into a love story.

Yes, the love story, by the way, is with his wonderful wife Eliza who is really the hero maybe of the book.

Yeah, no, I mean, she did a huge amount and I wouldn't be here in good shape without her.

But his memoir, Knife, is a book he says he had to write before he could write anything else.

I'm grateful to say that Solomon Rushdie is my guest because I love his new memoir, and I'm grateful that he's alive.

And so it feels like it's back in my own authorial space and I feel more in charge of it you know and so it feels good. Instead of being a victim you're controlling the story.

I read different parts of the memoir as Salman was writing it. Salman and I had a discussion about the writing in Knife about the wedding day.

And I think in the arc of Knife, having suddenly a detour to describe a very traumatizing wedding day would have changed the lens for the arc of Knife and what Knife was focusing on.
