Episode: Ep. 662 - The Media Creates Another Fake Scandal

Matt Walsh said the movie was decent but the book was better, describing it as a memoir about a middleclass Ohio upbringing and his mother's struggle with drug addiction.

"

I finally saw the movie I watched with my wife a couple of nights ago. We watched Hillbilly Elegy. And I hadn't read the book, but I'm sure the book was better. Books are always better than the movies in almost every case.

It's the movie based on the book written by JD Vance about his experiences. I think most of it is set in kind of middleclass working class Ohio with his family and his mother struggled with drug addiction, kind of his memoir.

That's not a message you're gonna see on those Valentine's Day candies I mean Look, I mean, I hope those won his wedding vows like look you're obviously not white, but I do Enough about Indians

The book was highlighted as an inspiring origin story when Amy Chua read the opening pages of Vance's manuscript, urged him to publish it, and praised its overlap with her own work; later, Neal Ferguson referenced the title to illustrate similar socioeconomic decline in Scotland, underscoring its relevance. Episode: Tiger Mom Amy Chua Takes Washington

Amy Chua read the first 10 pages of J.D. Vance's manuscript, which she received via email, and immediately told him he had to write the book, which he initially started as a paper for her class.

"

The origin story, this is actually amazing, the overlap between hillbilly elegy and tiger mom.

And then, um, in that email, he also said, you're, you know, your girls are lucky. You remind me of Maymaw. And you know, I'd never heard of Maymaw. So then he attaches this 10 page thing, uh, that is, here's like, here's my story. Right? And literally those first 10 pages are the beginning of Hillbilly Elegy.

And I wrote right back. And I just said, you have to write your own book. And he started writing it for me that semester as a, as a paper for the class.

Vance has reflection, and that's evident on every page of Hillbilly Elegy. He has complexity. He's capable of complex thought.

Did you find or learn from anyone you talked to any contradictions between the man that he describes himself as in Hillbilly Elegy and some of the realities that people responded to once that book came out?

When he published Hillbilly Elegy, which is the story of his upbringing, it became his ticket to fame, but it was a kind of tarnished ticket because it explained his world to elites and was used to justify his turning against the class he had fought so hard to join.

The memoir belongs in an era that no longer exists. It came out in the summer of 2016, went nowhere at first, then caught on after interviews and became a key explanation of the Trumpvoter world for the elites.

Not the guy who wrote Hillbilly Elegy or spoke so eloquently about the book and about his own upbringing.

Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar

The book was repeatedly referenced when the hosts examined JD Vance's political image and his Appalachian upbringing, noting its bestseller status but also criticizing it as a clichéd "bootstrap" narrative that failed to connect with many Americans. Krystal, Emily, Ryan, Saagar, and Ryan Grim all weighed in, with some pointing out the promotional help Vance received and others dismissing the memoir as trashing his own community. Overall, the discussion cast the title in a critical light.

He mentioned that Vance would tell you the same thing if you talked to him without the cameras rolling.

And it's funny thinking back on the advice that I gave him.

And thinking of like collecting, going from collecting like 30 emails at a Barnes & Noble in like Columbus, Ohio to being the vice presidential nominee is quite something.

I'll tell you it is personally surreal and weird to kind of see something.

J.D. Vance's book "Hillbilly Elegy" was discussed. The hosts remarked on how J.D. Vance is a true believer in the MAGA world, a true convert. This was attributed to his Appalachian roots, which he detailed in his book. It was noted that Vance's upbringing was actually in a middle to upper-middle-class area of Ohio, which made the 'redneck' image difficult to sustain, especially given his time on Wall Street and as a venture capitalist.

"

He was raised by his grandparents who were pretty well off in a pretty middle class area of Ohio.

His Appalachian roots are ancestral.

And he's clear about that in the book.

His family moved before he was born to this region of Ohio.

And the book is kind of about that migration out of Appalachia into the kind of Rust Belt suburbia.

Vance was repeatedly criticized for his book "Hillbilly Elegy", which was described as a "best-selling autobiography" and a "bootstrap story". It was stated that the book and his biography did not resonate with the American public.

"

And now JD's trying to grapple with them and make them more palatable. He was using the language of effectively like a niche online subculture that is very popular and very commonplace in that subculture and sounds horrible to the rest of the public and takes issues like a child tax credit that are pop you pull that is a 70% issue and makes it sound like something that is radical fringe weird like out of step with mainstream america etc It's the worst possible messaging you could possibly have right?

The democratic framing has been much more potent in terms of how people are thinking about the Jade Vance pick.

It was suggested that Vance's book was a reason he was chosen as the vice presidential candidate because it could help them in Rust Belt states.

"

J.D. Vance performed way worse than Mike DeWine in Ohio in the midterms. It was more of a Trump and Trump.

So maybe they've convinced themselves of that. I think more likely it is a pick of we feel comfortable with this person. I think that they feel that J.D. has shown enough loyalty despite all this horrible rhetoric about Trump in 2016 because he's gone there on all of Trump's worst things.

J.D. Vance went whole hog on vaccine conspiracies, whole hog on January 6th, overturning the election. Thanks, Mike Pence didn't have the courage. Whole hog on the Ukraine. It's Joe Biden's fault that Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. Right. So on all of these things.

The book was about the cultural rot in Appalachia and how people needed to take responsibility for their lives, a message that Vance has now flipped on, blaming Joe Biden and the elites for the problems in Appalachia.

"

And like the fucking theme of the book is that there is some cultural rot in Appalachia and people need to take responsibility for their lives. These are good people, but like they should take some ownership of their lives and you know, you can achieve.

Like his message last night was that Joe Biden and the elites are the reason why Appalachia is bad. And they're the victims. And J.D. Vance will help them. Big Daddy J.D. will help them.

Like so his whole shtick has flipped. It's all totally phony.

I think that J.D. Vance is excellent as the vice president for a number of for a number of reasons.

I mean, JD Vance had nothing to go on but his own brains and hard work. He didn't come from some advantaged family or an advantaged demographic or in the college admissions process, an advantaged skin color.

In fact, he's from a disadvantaged background in all of those respects and is now a vice presidential candidate.

J.D. Vance's background was discussed, highlighting his journey from a poor white working-class upbringing to success, a narrative the hosts felt was at odds with the Democrats' preferred narrative of identity politics.

"

JD Vance is just a great American success story.

But you see it's not the version of the success story that the Democrats want they don't want to hear about poor white working-class kids who through sheer hard work perseverance and determination become a great success because remember the Democrats ultimately that the the overarching narrative that they have and it's a it's central to the identity politics that it's an that is the the uh the keystone I mean that holds together the Democrat coalition a central part of it all is you have to have Democrats in charge to help non-white Americans because of all the racism in this country so the Democrats will construct quote positive racist or you know affirmative action whatever you want to call it policies to elevate non-white Americans so they can have their piece of the American dream because without that it's impossible through again this being the Democrat narrative it's impossible through just hard work determination stable family etc etc so JD Vance is a problem for them because they don't like

J.D. Vance was criticized by Trey Gowdy for his comments about Kamala Harris and other Democratic leaders being childless. He attempted to defend himself by saying the Democrats took his comments out of context and that he had made similar comments in the past.

"

If you look at the full context of what I said it's very clear the Democrats have tried to take this thing out of context and blow it out of proportion which is what they always do Trey because they don't have an agenda to run on themselves.

In September of 2021 Vance posted the cat ladies man they must be stopped.

In a fundraising email he described the serious issue of radical childless leaders in this country fighting back won't be easy our childless our child fighting back won't be easy our childless opponents have a lot of free time.

Just these basic cadences of life that I think are really powerful and really, really valuable when you have kids in your life. And the fact that so many people especially in America's leadership class just don't have that in their lives.

You know I worry that it makes people more sociopathic and ultimately our whole country a little bit less a less mentally stable. You go on Twitter and almost always the people who are most deranged and most psychotic are people who don't have kids at all.

He was really embraced by the kind of like tech elite because they were fascinated by his story, his book, his ambition.

So, yeah, there's a sense of like, well, does he really represent us to the VC candidate that we want? And then there's people that are supporting him and super excited to have someone who understands their business and their business incentives potentially in the White House.

J.D. Vance is the representative of the working class. He grew up in a very poor family in Appalachia. His grandmother raised him. His mother had a drug addiction problem. He has experienced in his lifetime on how he was raised with so many Americans, whether it's in the Ozarks where I come from, Appalachia, whether it's the Rust Belt. These are Americans that a lot of times feel like in Washington that they are viewed as flyover country. And he's going to be such a strong voice for them. And I think you'll see that tonight in his speech. So I'm extremely, extremely excited about Donald Trump, Donald Trump's selection of J.D. Vance.
