I have a new book that's just come out called Miller's Children by giving teenage killers a second chance matters for all of us

And I think there's a fundamental problem in the way courts have decided these cases that they're making what I believe is the false assumption that the nature of a teenager's crime predicts their potential and the reality of their rehabilitation.

And I haven't ever seen any evidence that demonstrates that having met Josh Phillips, having read about him and read other reports on him and I think that he is rehabilitated.

Probably very limited in my book Millers Children about the rehabilitation transformation of teenage killers.

There is a chapter called Are There Exceptions? And the two classes of exception seem to be kids who are so profoundly damaged in early childhood through really traumatic severe abuse that they never get a chance to develop the normal human range of feelings and relationships.

In Dr. Garberino's book, Listening to Killers he describes a path that juvenile killers take from childhood innocence to adult depravity.

In 2015 Steve Miller would release a book called Murder in Gross Point Park about this case, the events of which started to unfold on the afternoon of Tuesday January 24th 2012.

I was actually researching for another book that I was writing at the time, and I guess it was in 2012, and Detroit was called Detroit Rock City, and every place I would go in Detroit, because I'd written several other true crime books, people would say, what do you think about this Bechara case?

I love your book I really appreciate you coming on is there anything else you want to add before we close out the one just just to underscore that I think the book as as you've said isn't traditional true crime it is really trying to look at the subject writer relationship and while I spoke about that in this interview and I and it's in the book to some degree the subject writer relationship is as manipulative and confusing as as the relationship between Kendall Francois and myself and any kind of serial killer and their mark and their prey so I'm surely not saying a writer is like a serial killer but I am saying that there were some parallel manipulations going on and that's really what the book is about who is the reporter what is their role and how does that color what we see because this is a book but it's it's true in your daily newspaper too

Now you say in the opening of your book that The Dark Net, you think of it as more of an idea rather than a place. And the book distinguishes the idea of this Dark Net from Tor and Tor Hidden Services.

And so that could be, you know, the encrypted Tor network, The Dark Net. But it could also be in a secretive Facebook group.

Also, Paul wrote a book on this case which was turned into a 48 Hours Mystery special by the same name. It's called Seven Days of Rage, the deadly crime spree of the Craigslist killer.

Now, Sandra is a freelance writer whose new book Knocking on Joe Voices from Death Row includes the writings of Danny Rowling.

Together, they published a book called Killer Fiction, but the fiction that the killer was writing was getting closer and closer to reality.

I had that title in as a kind of placeholder for a while because early on when I had finished, you know, a complete version of the book, but not the final version.

And I had this chapter title there really thinking about specific people in my life who are going to read it and giving them a kind of warning, you know, don't read about this crime at this point of the day because I know for me that there was a point in my reporting when I got very deeply involved in learning about the crime itself.

But then as it got closer to publication, and I thought about changing the title, a lot of people have said to me, you know, I remember the point at which I was at the beginning of this chapter and I read this title and this was my reaction to it.

It's really about thinking about deeper issues that go along with the crime.

It's not... I don't blame you. Yeah, I mean, in the book, the murder is only one chapter and that's very deliberate.
