The English to their laws are not a soup eating nation, and for the most part those of us that do care for soup are obstinately conservative in our tastes.

The ordinary restaurant thinks it has done its duty when ox tail, mock turtle and tomato soup have been included in the bill of fare.

Yet the range of soups is very wide, as the hundred pages of recipes by no means exhaustive that follow will show.

The greatest care must be taken in adding liquid gelatine to a cold mixture as it so quickly solidifies.

To make a meringue to cover a pudding, beat several whites of egg until frothy, but not stiff. Then add the sugar gradually in the proportion of one tablespoon of powdered sugar to each white.

It is of the utmost importance that they should not be allowed to boil.

Episode: The Ivory Tower by Henry James ~ Full Audiobook

The Ivory Tower, one of the two novels that Henry James left unfinished at his death, was designed to consist of ten books. Only three were written, along with one chapter of the fourth.

"

The Ivory Tower, one of the two novels which Henry James left unfinished at his death, was designed to consist of ten books.

The novel seems to have grown out of another which had been planned by Henry James in the winter of 1909 to 1910.

Of this, the opening scenes had been sketched and a few pages written when it was interrupted by illness.

On taking it up again four years later, Henry James almost entirely recast his original scheme, retaining certain of the characters, notably the Bradham couple, but otherwise giving an altogether fresh setting to the central motive.

The new novel had reached the point where it breaks off by the beginning of August 1914.

With the outbreak of war, Henry James found he could no longer work upon a fiction supposed to represent contemporary or recent life.

The completed chapters, which he had dictated to his secretary in accordance with his regular habit from many years past, were revised and laid aside, not again to be resumed.

The pages of preliminary notes, also here printed in full, were not of course intended for publication.

It was Henry James' constant practice, before beginning a novel, to test and explore, in a written or dictated sketch of this kind, the possibilities of the idea which he had in mind.

Such a sketch was in no way a first draft of the novel.

He used it simply as a means of close approach to his subject, in order that he might completely possess himself of it in all its bearings.

The arrangement of chapters and scenes would so be gradually evolved, but the details were generally left to be determined in the actual writing of the book.

It will be noticed, for example, that in the provisional scheme of The Ivory Tower, no mention is made of the symbolic object itself or of the letter which is deposited in it.

The notes, having served their purpose, would not be referred to again and were invariably destroyed when the book was finished.

In the story of the death of the lion, Henry James has exactly described the manner of these notes, in speaking of the quote, written scheme of another book, end quote, which is shown to the narrator by Neil Parade, quote, loose liberal confidence.

It might have passed for a great gossiping eloquent letter, the overflow into talk of an artist's amorous plan, end quote.

If justification were needed for the decision to publish this, quote, overflow, end quote, it might be found in Parade's last injunction to his friend, quote, printed as it stands, beautifully, end quote.

"

I could not say at which station the woman and her baby entered the train.

Since we had left London, I had been engrossed in Henri Bergson's Time And Free Will as it in the English translation.

I agreed with his conclusion in advance, but I wished to master his reasoning.

It is at the great and solemn crisis decisive of our reputation with others that we choose in defiance of what is conventionally called a motive. And this absence of any tangible reason is the more striking the deeper our freedom goes.

This absence of any tangible reason is the more striking the deeper our freedom goes.
