It was initially intended to share copyediting tips and tricks, but expanded into a personal reflection on prose and the nature of writing. It unexpectedly became a New York Times bestseller.
It started out as my desire simply to share the weaponry that I had built up over the years as a copy chief and as a copy editor.
And basically, it was also about scratching an itch that had gone dormant for decades, the itch to want to write something.
And then I fell back on the, well, write what you know. And what I know is copy editing.
It assembled itself.
It happened and it took me a very long time of very consciously trying to get everything right.
