Conscience of a Conservative

we all but ensured the rise of Donald Trump.

it was we conservatives who are largely silent when the most egregious and sustained tax on Obama's legitimacy were leveled by marginal figures who would later be embraced and legitimized by far too many of us.

attacks Trump for his lies, for his conspiracies, his affection for autocrats and strongmen, his executive overreach and the threat he poses to our values and our institutions.

They read books like The Conscience of a Conservative.

I have little interest in streamlining government or making it more efficient for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare for I wish to extend freedom.

I'm reminded of Barry Goldwater in his book, Conscience of a Conservative, ghostwritten by Brent Bozell, who said, we conservatives, we're not just against big monopolistic government. We're against monopolies in all of their forms because they're not as responsive, and that kind of power can take away our rights as well.

I read the book "Conscience of a Conservative" and I realized that I was an anti-communist who believed in personal freedom and small government and a strong national defense.

Barry Goldwater put it very well in Conscience of a Conservative. He said conservatives need to make war on all monopolies. We need to make war on all unlimited power, all of this unchecked power.

But he didn't write that. That was written by L. Brent Buzell.

And L. Brent Buzell, of course, is the close friend and brother-in-law of William F. Buckley Jr., who is in 1955 is going to start national review on the heels of the 1954 Brown versus Board of Education decision.

I think if you look at this is really kind of in the weeds, but I think if you look at Bazell's conscience of a conservative that gets published in 1960 over Barry Goldwater's name, I think you can see he had the conservative manifesto in front of him.
