It's called The Reactionary Spirits and it covers, among other countries, India.

My colleague Zach Beachum who's something of like an honorary Canadian himself, he's got a book coming out called The Reactionary Spirit and in it he looks at the rise of authoritarian politics in advanced democracies and he thinks Canada is an example of a country that is resistant to far right populism because he thinks Canadian identity is so bound up in multiculturalism and that makes it harder for these movements to gain traction.

So to talk more about what J.D. Vance's promotion to VP candidate means for the election, for the Republican Party, and for the country, I talked to Zach Beachum, a senior correspondent for Fox and the author of a new book on right-wing authoritarianism called The Reactionary Spirit, How America's Most Insidious Political Tradition Swept the World.

That book comes out today.

I think J.D. Vance is the physical embodiment of what I call in the book the reactionary spirit.

Someone who is opposed to social change sees it happening through the democratic system.

And that is basically what J.D. Vance's political persona has become.

So you wrote a piece back in March where you questioned the idea of a growing political divide between men and women, but given the recent polling that shows the gender gap growing between Harrison Trump voters, do you still think that divides overstated at least when we're talking specifically about American voters?

The honest answer to that question is I don't know.

And so you ended up getting these polls that with, you see them a lot in this cycle that showed Trump getting an improbably large percentage of black voters for example, one that would defy anything close to the conflict.
