In 1776, the Lakota people were able to win a definitive victory over the Cheyenne, and they established the Black Hills as one of their holy sites, one of their family territories, and one of the spaces where they commune with their ancestors.
So it really does have enormous emotional significance to them, and it is a place that they fought over valiantly and bravely.
