And after Carl and his interpreter went to New Guinea and lived with the Asmat tribe for months and gained their trust and gained their respect, they began to tell him a brand new story that he had never heard before about what happened to Michael, the real story.

And they gave him a dire warning that if he ever told anyone what actually happened to Michael, that the whole village would likely be killed and maybe even he too would be killed.

But Carl didn't listen. After hearing what really happened to Michael, he left New Guinea and wrote a book about it called Savage Harvest.

toward the end of the book, he ventures up the Outaw River, hoping to live within the community for a month and somehow elicit a confession.

But Hoffman gets the cold shoulder and senses that the villagers are guarding a terrible secret as he makes clear in this gripping book, keeping the real story buried may have been the safest choice for everyone involved.

And there's one quotation in particular that I think stands out to Hoffman and will stand out to readers of the book.

So he, uh, Hoffman researches the disappearance extensively and part of his research involves multiple visits to villages and communities in the area.

People are telling him, look, Michael Rockefeller did make it to shore.

And then it led to execution.

And Hoffman goes a step further along that cycle and says that after Rockefeller's murder or death, a cholera epidemic went through the area and community members believe that this was in turn retribution for killing Rockefeller.

And there's an author we're going to talk about a lot, a guy named Karl Hoffman.

Hoffman writes beautifully about Rockefeller, about this story in particular.

And Hoffman seems to argue that Rockefeller has another education, another moment that really speaks to him and shapes his destiny.

And he says, as they began to cross the mouth of the Betts River, conflicting tides and winds whipped up waves and cross currents water that had been gentle one minute was heaving the next. A wave drowned their outboard and the catamaran began to drift. Then the waves capsized it.

Carl Hoffman does this and describes it again beautifully in his work.
