I began reading Buckeye backwards, my head moving from right to left by page nine; the title indicates Buckeye is ... the story which focuses on two married couples stretches from preWorldII to the close of the 20thcentury, following Margaret Salt and Felix, a closeted gay man, and later Cal Jenkins and Becky.
Ryan's previous books include the standout 2016 shortstory collection The Dream Life of Astronauts as well as three YA novels.
Cal was born with one leg two inches shorter than the other, keeping him out of WorldII and into Margaret's path; Becky discovers in childhood she can communicate with the dead, a gift that becomes a grim comfort during the Vietnam War.
If there's a flaw in this overwhelming novel it may be that the characters are a bit too uniformly eloquent and selfaware, but the epiphanies are expressed as beautifully as the prose itself.
