So this is from the Shakespeare play of Othello murdering his wife after he suspects her of cheating.

For Shakespeare's Othello starring Laurence Olivier, it quickly became a lesson in something else entirely. Students said they sat in stunned silence as Olivier appeared on screen in thickly painted blackface makeup.

And the Lawrence Olivier version is a classic version of the film. He was not wearing blackface because he was seeking to mock black people. He's wearing blackface in that film because he is playing Othello who is a black character.

You know, I think about the case of Othello, which is Shakespeare and being that I was an English major, I remember reading lots of Shakespeare. But Othello in particular really fits because it's that case of jealousy and that case he believed his wife Desdemona had been unfaithful and so he murders her.

The star vehicle. Like Dorian Gray starring Sarah Snook. Or Othello featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. Or Goodnight and Good Luck, directed by George Clooney, who also plays the lead.

Othello grossed $3.5 million last week.
