Episode: 7 Tips to Interact with Toxic Family Members Durin...

The author shared a story from the book about a young monk teaching other monks how to breathe on their first day of school, emphasizing the importance of breath in relation to emotions.

"

If you've read Think Like a Monk or heard Think Like a Monk, you'll know this example, but it's something that's worth repeating.

When I first saw a young monk teaching other younger monks on their first day of school, when I asked him what he was teaching them, he said he was teaching them how to breathe.

This obviously blew my mind because it was a 10-year-old monk telling me this.

I said to him, why do you teach them how to breathe? Then he said, well, what did you learn at school? And I was like, I think I learned one, two, three and ABC.

And he said, well, we teach them how to breathe because the only thing that stays with you from the moment you're born to the moment you die is your breath.

Episode: Adam Grant ON: Why Discomfort is the Key to Growth...

This was the speaker's first book and he mentioned that he tried to share wisdom from his experience as a monk. He felt that he could have done a better job in explaining his thought process, which is why he decided to do so in his second book.

"

And so it wasn't just the tradition I studied in. So that was very important to me because I believed that there were traditions beyond mine that would have values to share and important messages to share.

The other thing that I tried to do in the book was I definitely have always wanted to make ancient wisdom accessible, practical and relevant. That has always been my mission because I'm trying to speak to the 18-year-old kid that I was in London before I got into spirituality and meditation and mindfulness. I'm not trying to speak to the person I am now or someone who's already learned a ton. And so to me, to make it simple and accessible and relevant was my biggest goal and always has been.

Episode: 4 Steps to Build Emotional Maturity & Make Relatio...

The book is about the four levels of trust in relationships - zero trust, transactional trust, reciprocal trust, and unconditional trust. The podcast host suggested that people should start at zero trust and work their way up instead of giving unconditional trust away too early.

"

The concept of the 'theater of happiness' was introduced, which suggests that there are an infinite number of seats, implying that others' happiness does not diminish one's own.

"

In my first book, Think Like a Monk, I came up with this idea of the theater of happiness and how there are an unlimited number of seats in the theater of happiness.

Episode: 7 Signs You’re a People Pleaser & 7 Methods to Bre...

It was mentioned as the source of an activity that helps to identify personal values and where they originated from, and whether they are still relevant.

"

This activity asks you what are your current values? How's the current mindset or the ways you think? Where did they come from?

Did they come from your parents, your family, your school, your teacher, society, or yourself?

And do you still want them to be your values?

If you can do that activity in the first chapter of Think Like a Monk, what are your current values? Where did they come from?

And do you still want to keep those values?

Episode: 3 Effective Ways to Turn Your Life Around & Why Co...

It was mentioned that Jay Shetty's book, 'Think Like a Monk', explores the three key aspects of the monk mindset: focusing on the root of issues, intentional actions, and compassion. Three types of meditation are also highlighted in the book.

"

And you just published your book, Think Like a Monk, right? Can you maybe share with people something about those meditations that you've shared in the book?

And the reason why it's called Think Like a Monk is because I don't think anyone needs to live like one to think like one.

The first is monks always focus on the root of the issue. They always go to the core. They always go to the root.

The second thing that monks do is that everything is very intentional. Everything is very intentional. It's focused. It's not just by chance or by luck or by hope it happens.

And the third and final part of thinking like a monk is being able, I think we need a world that is more compassionate, more empathetic, more mindful.

Episode: Rick Rubin ON: Why Unconventional Methods Lead to...

The host's first book, it was rejected by 14 out of 17 publishers due to the proposed title, but he was happy with the decision to ultimately stick with the title.

"

It was the biggest reason why I chose the title. It felt like it was truth.

And every publisher was like, Jay, you should just write a book about how to find your passion or what you love in life. And I was just like, there's beauty in that. There's nothing wrong with a book about how to find your passion. That's great. But that's not me. Like, it's not my experience. It's not my book.

And I remember 14 out of 17 imprints said no to that title and we still went with it.

It was described as a book full of insight and practical knowledge, with a subtitle that captured attention by focusing on training the mind, rather than simply living like a monk.

"

It's called "Think Like a Monk", Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day.

I think most people in society are familiar with the concept that we can train our body right.

But I'm not sure that people commonly think that their mind can be trained.

And I think there's such a need there in what you're encouraging us to do as well and what the book's trying to help people do is recognize that each and every single one of us need to and can train our mind.

You don't need to live like a monk to think like a monk.

So this year my first ever book is coming out in April. It's my first ever book. It's called Think Like a Monk.

And so for me, of course, I want so many of you to be able to change your life and transform your life through my book.

I need to be able to make sure that you all know that it's available because guess what? The algorithm doesn't make everyone know and let everyone know that my book is available.

So I need to make sure that you all know that it exists and that it's available.

So many of our goals are really not goals, they're visions, right?

Episode: 3 Ways to Know if You are Being Codependent & Why...

"

She actually asked me questions from my book, Think Like a Monk, from the Purpose chapter, and broke it down incredibly well.

And hopefully you get to learn a bit more about my journey, especially if you love the book, Think Like a Monk.

I love that. I'm totally with you on that. And that's such an important point because I think that's the difference that I think a lot of these words now have become buzzwords and they fly around.

And so the personality test that I give is to help people and I've loved. So first of all, there is no personality test or astrological chart that's going to give you the answer that you need, but they're good indicators and signals.

And so in the beginning of the book, we got the monkey mind and the monk mind. The monk mind almost laughs when it notices the monkey and goes, ah, okay, I saw you. I see you. I see you, my fear. I see ego. I see what you're trying to do there.

"

I talk about in my book Think Like a Monk, I talk about the four Cs for the four types of people you'll meet in your life.

In my book, Think Like a Monk, I break down what I call the stages of trust.

Trust is earned. Once you've established reasonable expectations from a relationship, then it is easier to build and maintain trust.

Trust means we believe that the person is being honest with us, that they have our interests at heart, that they will uphold their promises and confidences and that they will stay true to these intentions in the future.

Trust is about intentions, not abilities.

And on page seven, there is a story that you tell that is a beautiful metaphor that illustrates the external influences that obscure our true selves.

You know what story I'm talking about? I do. I believe it's, is it dust or is it me?

Is that about the mirror and the dust? Yes. Yes. And so the story is all about this metaphor of up in this attic of the ashram, there's a mirror with a thick layer of dust.

And when you look at a mirror that's accumulated, a thick layer of dust, you can't truly see yourself, your soul, your spirit. And the dust comes from your life. It's not you.

Jay Shetty discussed his experience writing this book, emphasizing his focus on the process rather than the outcome or perfection. He shared that he waited four years between the initial idea and publication.

"

When I set out to write Think Like a Monk, I was focused on the process.

I actually had the idea for the title Think Like a Monk in the book back in 2016, and I was offered a book deal in 2016.

And I chose not to do it because it didn't feel like the right time to tell the story, and it didn't feel like the right time to feel like I knew what I wanted to share and give and express.

So I actually didn't sign a book deal until 2018. And I didn't finish writing the book until 2019, and the book came out in 2020.

So there was a four year gap from the time I thought of the title and was offered a book deal to the point that I actually published a book because I was focused on the process.

Like you said, I'm so used to speaking and I always thought that, oh, you could just speak and then write and then it would look the same and sound the same and people would digest it the same. And then I started realizing that that wasn't the case.

The book is Jay Shetty's memoir and it is the first book he wrote. It was described as being unoriginal and relying on material that was already well-covered in psychology books.

"

He writes his book it's pretty unoriginal

His book was bad.

It's just like his second book, how many books is that?

He writes about how to improve your relationships, no one ever bothered to ask why a monk who took a vow of celibacy would be an authority on relationships.

So little of what was in the book pertained to his experience as a monk. I was like, well if that's his origin story, if that's his basis for his authority, where is it? Why isn't it in the book? It's all just pop-psychology and that's just taken from all these other sources and put in the book.

For me it's the difference though, monk see as the monk mind and the monkey mind. So the monkey mind is considered to the part of our minds that is like jumping from branch to branch and just being distracted by different fruits on every tree. Whereas the monk mind is focused intentional and aware at all times.

I'm not expecting anyone to read the book and then give up all their possessions and live with nothing but I'm actually saying that this mindset has actually allowed me to be more grateful for what I do have. It's allowed me to be a better user of what I do have. Sure. And and a better advocate for it.
